"Griff's Room Band - Shut The Case"

Griff’s Room Band, an Americana/pop trio in RVA, has released a new EP called Shut the Case. The string band trio began their career by busking in Colonial Williamsburg and then in Europe on a self-managed tour, and along the way played on many stages. Two acoustic guitars and a fiddle are all this trio needs.
"Corner Booth" introduces the listener to the band on a jaunty note, as the high-intensity of the string band matches the excitement of the three-part vocal harmonies from heaven. "Could Be" is the Americana answer to Boyz II Men with their lady-lovin’ and smooth talking (harmonizing). The brightness of their instruments comes through in all of the songs. - Sounds of RVA

"Griff's Room Band at the Tobacco Company"

Griff’s Room bursts with youthful exuberance. The fresh-faced trio, formed in Williamsburg in 2011, has no time for angst. Members play as if they’ve recently burst out of the womb. There’s a romantic innocence to their 20-something brand of Americana, but they never veer into sophomoric melancholy. Tunes such as the impossible-to-resist “Corner Booth,” the Beatlesque “Could Be” and the stoic yearning of “Daylight Fades” convey their pop, front-porch country offerings with playful ease. Nothing about what they do sounds contrived or premeditated, and if the stars align just right, this band could be huge someday. Griff’s Room plays Sunday, July 13. Doors open at 7 p.m. Free. thetobaccocompany.com. - Style Weekly, Chris Bopst

"Swell EP: Griff's Room Band - Shut the Case EP"

Griff's Room Band is a folk rock/pop trio from Virginia that formed in 2011 and earned its street credit (quite literally) by playing to tourists and locals alike on the streets of Colonial Williamsburg. Over the past few years of their existence, the three friends have tightened up their infectious sound, playing numerous shows at and away from their usual bench location (see picture above). They even traveled over to Europe to enliven other historic streets. Recently, they uprooted their two acoustic guitars and fiddle over to Richmond, VA to live and make music together, which led to their first proper recording.

Their debut EP entitled Shut The Case is a 6-song collection of what Griff's Room Band does best: upbeat folk pop with rich acoustic guitar melodies, lively fiddling, and vocal harmonies that are almost too perfect. From the energetic lead-off track "Cornerbooth" and the sincerity of "Could Be" to the bluegrass-leaning "The Fine Line" and complex intertwined guitar picking of "All In", Griff's Room Band's proves to be a band with enough range to please just about any pedestrian and the originality to attract active listeners.

Bio

"Started from the bottom now we here"... well, maybe not quite the bottom, but pretty close. Humble beginnings busking in Colonial Williamsburg for tourists and fellow students from The College of William and Mary eventually led to Griff's Room Band's first gig in 2012. Now, Sony Records is funding a recording session at Dave Matthews' private studio in Charlottesville, VA for the talented indie rock five-piece, whose sound is characterized by electrifying fiddle playing and “three part vocal harmonies from heaven” (Sounds of RVA).

This exciting development comes on the heels of the successful self-release of their debut EP Shut The Case in July of 2014. Positive reviews have poured in from indie music blogs including this one from the 9:30 Club:

"Griff’s Room Band are a five-piece band that manages to cover a huge array of emotional ground within a single song. They’ve captured a snapshot of their doubtlessly entrancing live sound in their wonderful EP Shut the Case...It’s just really, really good."

The Flat Hat noted that, “With three singers at the helm and a roots rock ethos, The Avett Brothers are the most obvious comparison, but the songwriters of Griff’s Room Band are far from copycats. They also bear some resemblance to early Wilco albums like “Being There” and “Summerteeth” and to bands like Pavement and Built to Spill in their ability to harken back to classic song structures while throwing enough curveballs to make them feel fresh and exciting.”

Sony executives and indie blogs aren't the only ones taking notice of Griff's Room Band's sound and potential. Richmond's Style Weekly said that “...if the stars align just right, this band could be huge someday." Whatever the future holds, this band is going to embrace every opportunity to perform their music together and bring the good vibes, no matter what.
