After the release of her single “Born To Be Free,” Holly T spun up a mix filled to the brim with sultry house tunes to set the mood.

British-born singer, songwriter, and DJ Holly T has been shaking up the scene ever since she moved across the pond from London to New York City. Over the past few years, she’s teamed up with artists like Gattuso and Fangs while honing her skills behind the decks along the way. But Holly T truly emerged on the scene in a big way in 2020 after working with Disco Killerz on “Nothing To Lose,” dropping her original tune “Anthem,” and remixing NERVO and Krewella’s “Goddess.”

Now, with the new year in full swing, Holly T has her sights set on further growing her career as an artist and has already begun to make her mark with a new tune dubbed “Born To Be Free.” This uplifting future house tune leans on its infectious groove and pop-infused vocals that will immediately put a smile on the face of anyone who tunes in.

And what better way to celebrate the single than by dropping a shuffle-inducing mix to pair with it? Holly T has done just that with this half-hour ride that will brighten up your Sunday and have you feeling refreshed. So read on for some insight on her plans and future releases this year and give this mix a spin.

I am really excited about 2021, I am working on a tonne of new music and have a few releases coming up, one more with Disco KIllerz, ‘Up To You’ on ‘Be Yourself’ coming out this summer. I am really looking forward to shows coming back, being able to perform, and am excited to see what life and the industry looks like post-Covid. As my favorite motto goes… onwards and upwards!

1001Tracklists Spotlight: Holly T

Holly T takes over Spotlight Mix duties today with an energetic mix of everything from house to future rave, pop crossovers to future house! The past year has been an exciting chapter for the British DJ, singer and songwriter as she’s ramped up her solo music career. Her interview gives us some insight into the liberating transition, highlight releases like her remix for NERVO & Krewella, and life during COVID and pregnancy. Turn it up and enjoy!

1001Tracklists · Holly T - 1001Tracklists Spotlight Mix

Holly, thanks so much for joining us today! We’re so excited to share your Spotlight Mix! Could you start out by telling us a bit more about your background in singing, songwriting, DJing and music production?
I initially came to the US (from London) as a dancer at 19 years old. Having graduated Alvin Ailey I started choreographing for artists, I was also writing songs by myself just for fun, though it was something I really wanted to push forward and develop more. I was hired by a music management company to work with one of Randy Jackson’s artists and I decided to pass on my songs to the management company that hired me.

They signed me to their publishing and management. I started writing top lines for other producers, which was my introduction in to the EDM world. After three years, even though I had gained lots of experience writing and had learnt the basics of the business, I felt that I wasn’t growing in the way I would have liked. Gaining lots of experience writing was great for me, my only issue was that writing for other people didn’t give me the artistic freedom I longed for, I had my own vision.

After leaving I self released my first song “Just You and I” which did very well. I was still trying to learn more about the industry and network so I attended ADE, and whilst in Amsterdam I had my first taste of DJing. A friend had taught me the basics and from that moment I was literally hooked. It was so fun, coming from a professional dance background coincided so well with everything that embodied me. When I came back I made the decision to embark on my own production project. I released my first song with Disco Killerz on Enhanced, “Nothing to Lose,” which made US radio and editorial on Spotify.

Tell us some more about making the transition from writing and singing for other artists and as a feature artist to pushing your own solo career beginning last year?
It just felt like such a natural transition for me, especially DJing, coming from a dance background and then writing my own songs, what better way was there to bring it all together than to DJ? As I said it just embodied everything I was and am. It was also quite liberating for me to start my own project that I had complete control over. I felt that as a writer, writing for other people there just wasn’t the freedom that I was craving. Many instances I would write a top line for other people and think um, actually this is really a Holly T song. I also believe as an artist there is no cap on growing and discovering more and so I look forward to where this journey is going to take me.

What are the sounds Holly T stands for today (both in production and as a DJ)?
I would say as a person I am happy go lucky and love pushing positivity where I can. The whole vibe of my music is uplifting, with upbeat tempos, and as a dancer I definitely want to make you want to get up and dance. “Nothing to Lose” was released in March when Covid hit and the lyrics hit so hard, the opening line was “Even when the world around us falls apart, just know that we always stay strong.” I would like to believe they were lyrics that gave people hope when we most needed it. I want to make people feel good with the music I make and the music I play. Also, being a lyricist I maybe sometimes obsess over words a little too much, but I love writing positive driven songs which leave the listener feeling hopeful. My only goal with my music is really to bring joy and happiness especially during times like this.

Looking at your solo releases, which are you the most proud of and why?
From all of my solo releases I am most proud of “Just You and I” and “Free,” they come in equally together. Both were self releases and have done the highest amount of streams. “Just You and I” is such a positive driven song about capturing the moment of now, it was also written during a period of my life where I was going through a high amount of change and uncertainty, but I think the song and the writing showed my inner strength and perseverance. It was also my first successful song going to Mint and just something I felt incredibly proud of, I love the feeling of people resonating to not just the song itself but the words and what I was trying to say. It was like I was letting everyone in on how I was feeling and they were supporting that. I am also incredibly proud of “Free,” (by Ultra Nate) it was one of my favorite covers to do, again very positively driven and I love how even today people still vibe to It. it’s such a classic and just so fun to sing.

Take us inside your head for your Spotlight Mix. How did you approach creating a flow and what has the vibe recording sets at home been like?
I like to tell a story with my mix and I am very picky about what I choose. If a song makes me want to dance then I am sure to add it. I obviously wanted to showcase my own songs but also included some of my favorite hits. I love mixing up different styles almost like taking the listener on a rollercoaster ride versus just staying in one genre. Recording at home is actually the thing that’s been keeping my passion alive, being pregnant and stuck inside isn’t easy and I have definitely had moments of feeling unmotivated. But when I start playing on my CDJs and start dancing, I’m like “I can’t wait for this to be over!!” It’s honestly the best thing to wake me up, I lock myself downstairs and start jamming for hours. I love putting sets together and recording them at home is just so much fun.

Looking closer at your Spotlight Mix, what were three standout tracks included in the set and why?
“Fake Friends” by PS1 was my favorite song of 2020 and so I had to include that one. Great hook, great vocals and production. Also “You’ve Done Enough” by UK duo Gorgon City with DRAMA and “Dreams” by David Guetta and MORTEN in the Kue remix. I love remakes of old songs and this is one of my favorites. Lanie Gardner’s vocals sound amazing. Really cool songs.

While quarantine and COVID life has been complicated and trying, we’ve found a lot of positives bubbling beneath the surface. Besides the music mentioned, what have been some of your highlights over the past year? How are you maintaining a positive outlook as well as artistic creativity?
2020 was a really interesting year to say the least, and on a personal level it changed a lot for me. I got pregnant in August and decided that it was the best time to be pregnant, home all the time, I could rest when I needed too, eat well and stay in a peaceful mindset. I also had the opportunity to dedicate even more time to music and one of the great highlights of 2020 was doing the NERVO and Krewella “Goddess” remix. I feel really proud of that because not only have I been huge fans of both for years, but to be included in an all female project was really empowering for me. I loved the original, I loved what it represented and Raja Kumari vocals are fire.

I would be lying if I said it wasn't hard to maintain a positive outlook with the uncertainty of the future and the industry, but I also know that these are the times when your faith has to be stronger than ever and I look forward to coming out the other end.

And as we look ahead, what’s up next for you? What are two goals for the Holly T project that you’re striving towards for the future?
My goal is always the same really, I want to keep building on what I have already accomplished and as long as music makes me happy I will keep going. Working on a lot of new music right now and have a few releases coming up, one more with the very talented Disco Killerz which is a huge deal for me because they have always been artists I have really looked up to. I remember when I heard “Stellar,” it was one of those songs that just inspired me so much and still one of my favorites. We released “Nothing to Lose” on Enhanced just before Covid hit and our next release “Up To You” is coming soon on Be Yourself. Definitely exciting times ahead!

British DJ, Singer and Songwriter Holly T just released the unifying and liberating new dance anthem we all need right now, “Born To Be Free”

Born in London then moving to New York at nineteen years old, Holly T has been growing quickly in the music industry ever since she started. Coming from a professional career in dance, she started off in music by writing for other artists which paved the way for her own recording artist career.

Her very first solo single, “Just You and I,” was released in 2018 and was included in Spotify’s most sought after electronic music playlist ‘Mint.’ Following that, she released heavily-supported covers of Nelly Furtados’ “Say It Right” and Ultra Nate’s “Free,” with the former being a collaboration with fast-rising artist GATTÜSO.

Her first single as a producer turned out to be her biggest to date in “Nothing To Lose” with Disco Killerz. Released last March on Tritonal’s Enhanced Music label, the song garnered rotation at dance radio in the US and established her as a househould name in dance music.

Her most recent original, “Anthem,” was co-written with hot UK songwriter/artist team and frequent Tiesto collaborators, Bright Sparks, and her most recent release overall was an official remix of Nervo and Krewella’s “Goddess” in October.

She now graces us with “Born To Be Free,” a catchy dance anthem that is destined for club and festival floors once they are back up; but for the time being, it will serve as the perfect unifying and liberating force we all need right now. Listen to Holly T’s new single above and be sure to follow her on social media to keep up with what she comes up with next!

"Holly T Drops Insanely Fun New Single, “Anthem”"

Galantis had such a unique sound when they debuted in 2013, though it wasn’t until they released “Runaway (U&I)” in October 2014 that their sound was solidified. Many have thought it impossible to replicate, but Holly T just dropped a new song called “Anthem” that very much disproves that.

“Anthem” follows a lot of the same formulas as Galantis with poppy synths, a whimsical vocal, and a happy, upbeat tempo. Though, the song isn’t without Holly’s own signature as she puts her own spin on the song. While it certainly bears heavy resemblance to Galantis, it’s not a rote copy by any means.

"An Exclusive with the Popular British Dancer, Singer, Songwriter Holly T Culture"

An Exclusive with the Popular British Dancer, Singer, Songwriter Holly T
Culture

By Shahenda Mahmoud

Thursday, October 17

From ballet and choreography to singing and songwriting, Holly T, the British multi-talented singer and songwriter, has taken the long way to pursue her dreams. Now, with 1.6 million streams for her first record "Just you and I", her follow-up song "Let’s Get Weird" with Fangs being featured on New Music Friday, and her latest released 'say it right' landing on the cover of the Friday Cratediggers Spotify list, Holly T is reaping the fruits of success after sowing seeds of hard work and devotion.

How old were you when you started dancing?

I very reluctantly took my first ballet class at 6 years old. I had to go to accompany my sister who really wanted to be a ballerina. I soon stopped and then at 11 years old enrolled in Musical Theatre Classes and realized I loved dancing and never stopped since.

Among all your talents, which do you think reflects your personality the most?

Music and songwriting. I love being able to express how I feel in a song. Especially when I am able to write for myself.

Which song is your favorite?

Of mine? Just You and I which you can find on Heart Beats on Spotify. Of all time, Borderline by Madonna, I am a huge Madonna fan, especially early Madonna.

When did you start songwriting/singing? What inspired you to start a songwriting/singing career?

I started quite late, in my mid-twenties, I was hired as a choreographer to work with a music management company. I had always been writing songs but this time I had someone to give them too and really critique them. Working with recording artists was great because it helped me expand my own art. I needed to share my voice and songwriting in addition to dance. I spent the next two years honing my craft, writing toplines for different producers.

Aside from choreography/ ballet, what other types of dancing do you like to perform/learn?

I graduated from Alvin Ailey, I am a big fan of Martha Graham which I studied for four years and both Dunham and Horton techniques.

To whom do you owe your success?

My best friend Richard. He has been my rock, helped me when I needed it and taught me many things about the business.

If you were in the position of quitting a talent, which talent would you give up? Dancing, songwriting, or singing?

Well, I already stopped dancing a while ago, so dancing… dancing was my first love but like anything you grow, learn and discover more.

Being originally from the UK, then moving to America, how did the travel and international experience help you boost your career?

I left the UK at 19 years old, I started my career in the US. I often wonder what would I have done had I stayed back home. Would l have booked more or fewer jobs, where would my career have taken me? Traveling in general boosts your character. You become more open, diverse and learn so much about yourself and the world. I would recommend to anyone to get out of the bubble you grew up in and see what's going on in the world.

Who's your favorite singer, songwriter, and choreographer?

Don't really have a favorite singer, songwriter, without a doubt, Carole King and choreographer Martha Graham.

A lot of us face some moments of failure and despair, how do you respond to those feelings so they won't affect you long-term?

I don't believe in failure. I believe our journey is already mapped out and whatever failure did occur was to steer you in the direction of your destiny. I believe the universe is looking after you and we are exactly where we are meant to be right now. I think it's important to take each and every experience, however, good or bad as a lesson to allow yourself to grow and learn. I am a big believer in loving awareness. Always moving onwards and upwards.

"Holly T & PHZES "Writing Stories" Spotlight Mix"

Holly T & PHZES really caught our attention after hearing Austin Kramer premiere their new collaboration on his ‘Unreleased’ show on Tomorrowland One World Radio. Fast forward a few weeks and we’re thrilled to be celebrating “Writing Stories” together with both artists! To keep the feel good summer vibes flowing from the track, Holly T & PHZES go b2b in the mix to each showcase what their live sets will sound like when they return behind the decks! In their interview we get an inside look at the production process behind the track, some of their favorite tracks of the moment, dream collaborations, upcoming plans, and much more!

Holly, PHZES, thanks so much for joining us to celebrate your new collab “Writing Stories”! The track really caught our attention after Austin Kramer premiered it. How has the response to the release been like through your eyes?
Well, first of all, thank you for having us! The response so far to “Writing Stories” has been great. As you mentioned, having Austin premiere the song on his new radio show, on Tomorrowland One World Radio, was a great indicator for what was to come. So far we’ve seen great editorial support, and some nice streaming numbers through the first few weeks. As summer kicks off, we expect that the streaming numbers will continue to grow nicely!

Take us back to when you first met or heard the other’s music. What was your impression?
Holly T: I first heard PHZES’ remake of “Oops...I Did It Again.” I absolutely loved it, loved how they pitched down the vocals with a really cool drop. We were connected through managers and they reached out wanting to collab, so I thought why not?!

PHZES: We have been a fan of Holly’s work for some time now. We really loved her collaboration with Disco Killerz on “Nothing to Lose.” Our manager works closely with Matthew from Disco Killerz and we asked him to reach out and make the initial connection. From there, we got to talking with Holly, and both felt a collaboration was a must!

What made “Writing Stories” the right track for your first collaboration?
When thinking about the right track for a collaboration, we both took the recent pandemic into mind. We were all experiencing a bit of a “pandemic slump” and we knew if we were, millions of other people were going through the same thing. We wanted to work on something that would bring some happiness and inspiration to listeners that things would get better and we would be “writing stories” again soon. The production was also largely influenced by our feelings during the pandemic, we wanted to really bring out the feel good, summer vibes that so many of us may have missed in 2020. Something that you could listen to and almost transcend into a better period of time, where everything was sunshine and fun!

Looking closer at the track, can you each highlight your favorite element in the production?
For us both it's the vocals. When we first heard the topline by the Companions, we knew straight away this was a song we wanted to work on. We love uplifting vocals and feel good songs, like most of the songs we both have released, and it follows a similar feel good vibe.

Turning our attention toward your Spotlight Mix, how did you approach this set and create a flow?
We spent a good bit of time preparing this one for you guys! We wanted to bring something fresh, from both parties, that would represent something you might hear from us in a live set. We crafted this one extra specially, because it has been some time since we have played shows, so instead of doing it as a regular mix show, we wanted it to have a club vibe. Something energetic that you might hear us play live. We also selected the tracks very methodically, incorporating tracks from some of the biggest producers in the world, and tracks by producers you may not be familiar with yet!

Looking closer at your music selection, can you highlight three tracks included and why they stand out to you?
Holly T: Ben Rainey & Lewis Roper ft. Lauren Carter - “Rapture.” Great cover.

Earth N Days - “Talk To Me.” Makes me want to dance – I love incorporating tech house songs in my mix, this one is fire!

Phil Soda - “On My Own.” Great vocals, great lyrics.

PHZES: Pierce Fulton - “Kuaga (Lost Time).” Pierce was a big inspiration for us to get into producing music, and he will be greatly missed by artists and fans.

PHZES & J12 ft. Sunnie Williams - “I See.” This was one of the first club records we produced, and we felt it had the perfect energy for this mix!

Tove Lo - “Talking Body” (KREAM Remix). Just an overall amazing remix. This one will stay in our sets for a long time.

With such a strong track in “Writing Stories,” we have to ask, can we expect any future collaborations between PHZES & Holly T?
YES! We are both a huge fan of electronic covers, and we have a very special one coming your way very soon! Be on the lookout for that. We also have an amazing remix of “Writing Stories” by Anthony Keyrouz coming out this summer that we are excited for too.

Outside of collaborating with each other, who is someone you want to work with?
Holly T: I would love to one day collaborate on a song with Becky Hill. I have been a fan for quite a while, not only a great vocalist but also a great lyricist.

PHZES: We have been big fans of artists like GATTÜSO, Zack Martino, and Mahalo for a long time, and would love to do something with them in the future! We also have been working with some really talented vocalists and producers, and have a few things we are wrapping up now!

We’ve started to see live shows coming back across the US, so what effect has seeing those had on you? Do you have any plans for upcoming live shows that you could share?
It has been really exciting to see the world start to return to a level of “normalcy,” and it has been really inspiring to see shows begin to pop back into the picture. We have all been spending time preparing our live sets and getting everything ready for, when we do begin playing again, providing an awesome experience for our fans. We have been working on setting up dates for potential shows on the west coast in the not so distant future and are really excited for that!

And as we look ahead to summer, what else has you excited?
Holly T: I am super excited about the possibility of shows coming back. I also have another release coming out with Disco Killerz on Be Yourself, a great summer tune. We've been working on it for quite a while and finally it's ready for release. I can't wait!

PHZES: As Holly has mentioned, we are really excited for the possibility of shows, but we also have remixes for TELYKast and Sammy Adams, and of course the Anthony Keyrouz remix of “Writing Stories,” that we are looking forward to!

"Disco Killerz & Holly T team up for a brand new track ‘Up To You’"

Be Yourself Music have yet another hot one on their hands as New York’s kings of the collabo Disco Killerz, as they so often do, seize the dancefloor and hoist it high like a trophy winner with the daytime dynamite of ‘Up To You’.

Joined again at the controls by Holly T after both told the world that there’s ‘Nothing To Lose’, the high energy content of ‘Up To You’ brings sunshine flavours and toned and tanned melodies. Vocals are delivered buoyantly, eyeing up sax by the pool and finding the strength to power through themes of rocky relationships, drawing on the range and dynamism of Ella Henderson and Ella Eyre. Disco Killerz and Holly T tell you to come for the sun, stay for the attitude.

Their skills in finding the right people to buddy up with run deeper than who’s headlining – ‘Up To You’ was co-written by Laura White, the former X-Factor star with previous credits listing Galantis, Cash Cash, Max Styler and Mistajam, and reuniting as part of Disco Killerz‘ dream team having guested on the Gattuso-assisted ‘Million Things’ – aptly titled, given its 5 million+ streams to date on Spotify.

The latest in a line of high-class hook-ups, ‘Up To You’ follows Disco Killerz working with Liquid Todd, Mahalo, The 9Ds and a string of vocalists supplying the all-important finishing touch. Holly T‘s pull is just as strong, forging her own path across the dancefloor in tandem with Gattuso, Fangs and Bright Sparks (of Tiesto ‘On My Way‘ fame), and with major Spotify numbers telling their own story. When leaving their latest ‘Up To You’, they’re sure you’ll make the right decision. - Rave Jungle

"10 Questions with “Up To You” Artists Disco Killerz and Holly T"

THE TAKE 5 SERIES
Disco Killerz and Holly T

The Disco Killerz and Holly T have joined forces for latest release, single “Up To You,” released this past June. We chatted with all three artists to find out how this project came to fruition, learn about the minds behind the song, and much more!

The Disco Killerz are a DJ/producer duo, comprised of Matthew Danger and Uri Illuz. The New York-based duo has been making music together for the past six years, working with Enhanced, Armada, and most recently, Be Yourself Music. “Up To You” was released with the latest record label.

The Disco Killerz are best known for their 2019 single “Tongue Tied” which boasts over two million streams on Spotify. They have collaborated with artists like GATTÜSO and Liquid Todd, and have been remixed by artists like Morgan Page, Dubvision, and Breathe Carolina. “Million Things,” a collaboration with GATTÜSO, made its way to the top 10 on Billboard Dance Radio chart.

When asked about the artwork for “Up to You,” which features roller skates, the duo gave a very telling answer regarding the artistic vision behind the single: “The picture just looked fun, sexy, empowered, kinetic, retro, and embodied the energy of the song.”

As for the third mind behind the single, Holly T is a New York-based British DJ, singer, and songwriter. Her debut as a producer was in collaboration with the Disco Killerz as well: 2020 single “Nothing to Lose,” released with Enhanced music.

Before she took on production, Holly T started her career writing for other artists. She made a splash with her first solo single, “Just You and I,” landing a feature on Spotify’s top electronic music playlist “Mint.” The song has exceeded two million streams on the platform. She is best known, however, for her 2019 cover of Ultra Nate’s “Free,” which is inching close to four million streams on Spotify.

Holly T shares with us the extensive work that went behind producing “Up to You”––the song was in the works for a year! When discussing the singer on the track, Hayley Mays, she explains, “We worked on this song for a year, trying out different vocalists on the record and throwing around different ideas on the production side, we eventually used Hayley Mays vocals on the song; she really took it to the next level.”

Disco Killerz
Q: Hi Disco Killerz! We couldn’t find your bio online. Tell us who are the Disco Killerz?

Disco Killerz is a duo, consisting of myself (Matthew Danger) and Uri Illuz. Over the last 6 years we’ve been releasing music with Enhanced, Armada, and now with the lovely crew at Be Yourself Music! Stylewise, I would say that we fall into the dance pop house lane, as we are both fans of pop music. A lot of our earlier songs we wrote entirely ourselves, including toplines, such as “Stellar” and “In The Music,” which I think reflect a lot of the influences from our long musical backgrounds. We live and work in NY where we have a studio in Gramercy Park. We’ve had the pleasure of working with so many amazing musicians and collaborators over the years including Liquid Todd, GATTÜSO, Laura White, Hayley May, Jem Cooke, Mahalo, Jimmy Gnecco, Brandyn Burnette, Kat Nestel, and the list goes on and on. Suffice to say we are HUGE fans of working with other producers, writers, and singers.
Q: Where did you two grow up? and why Dance music?

I grew up here in the US, combination of NY and New England. Uri is originally from Israel. We’ve both played music our whole lives. I grew up seriously studying classical piano, as well as violin. Uri was primarily a guitar player, with great Jazz chops. Over time, we both gravitated towards rock and pop, writing songs, playing in bands. We both found the whole world on synthesizers and music programming pretty early on and Uri, being from Israel, started with Psy Trance, so he’s been producing dance music much longer than I have. I went to SXSW about 7 years ago and saw a bunch of bands one night, and then went to see Knife Party, who were relatively unknown. I was blown away with what I saw and heard and realized that the world was primed for a dance music takeover. About a year later, Uri ended up in NY and we were sharing a music studio together, and the day he moved in we started writing a progressive house song that was signed to Perfecto.
Q: Your new single "Up to You" which was co-produced with Holly T and Laura White on the vocals is Sick! Where did this song come from? (Who began this project, and who approached who with the concept and or message.)

We had worked with Laura White in the past on our song “Million Things.” I actually stumbled randomly on Laura’s music through some algorithmic recommendation and heard her first EP, which is very soulful and also has pop influence. When I looked her up, I saw that she wrote (and sang on uncredited) Galantis x Hook & Sling “Love On Me,” and I was sold! We hit her up with a track at the time, and that became a collaboration with GATTÜSO. Both of us, and Holly, all have a background in writing songs and toplines – which was also Holly’s primary focus before she started working on DJ’ing and producing – however as we’ve all gotten introduced to more topliners, it’s become increasingly interesting to hear amazing songs and be able to work on them without always starting at ground zero, with a totally empty session in front of you and having to do it all. Laura is so amazing and prolific and we basically love everything she does. She had worked up an idea for this one with co-writers, Brunelle, and we picked it up and ran with it. We had also recently worked with Hayley May (who we had heard, also uncredited, on early songs of hers with Joel Corry and M-22) and knew she would be perfect for this one!
Q: The artwork for "Up to You" displays roller-skates, something reminiscent of "Roller Disco," a fad that was born at the height of the Disco Era. Are you two fans of Disco music? What does the word “Disco” mean to you?

Let’s break it down like this. If you were to ask us to name the top musicians and producers across ALL genres of music, all of these below would probably land top 3:

Best producer: Giorgio Moroder
Most legendary guitar player: Nile Rodgers (Chic)
Most insane bass player: Verdine White (Earth Wind & Fire)
Most insane vocal harmonies: The Bee Gee’s
The source of all modern pop music: ABBA!

And of course, the best party ever, that neither of us ever went to …. was apparently Studio 54!

Some of these are debatably disco or maybe bordering on disco, but still thats the foundation of modern dance and pop music. So, yeah – we are fans!

In truth, we just thought the roller skates were a great image and until now, didnt even make the connection to roller disco (although there’s dancing in the lyric video). The picture just looked fun, sexy, empowered, kinetic, retro, and embodied the energy of the song.
Q: New York was the birthplace of the legendary disco Studio 54 and Chicago the birthplace of House Music, but the United States also has a complicated past with Disco. Prior to this interview, were either of you aware of the anti-black and anti-queer "Disco Demolition Night, the night Disco died" and in one paragraph or less, what can you tell us about it?

I actually learned about it in the Bee Gee’s documentary, which was only recently, but prior to that it was really never on our radar. Moreover, I never would have made any connection between that event and our moniker, Disco Killerz. Having read about it, it’s definitely a controversial event that has taken on a lot of negative connotations. But those were very different times, and clearly to the above, black and queer performers, musicians, writers, players, singers, have made such a massive impact on music, popular culture, and the way we experience music of ALL genres, that it’s impossible to imagine music without them. Personally, I’m a huge fan of Jazz, funk, soul, and pianists like Ahmad Jamal, Billy Preston (who played with both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones), and organ players like Booker T and so many more, and the list goes on and on and on. To be honest, I don’t think that either of us look at any musician and identify them by race, gender, or sexuality. Everyone’s in it together, however, unfortunately the world still has a long way to go in terms of universal acceptance, or embracing people of all colors, creeds. That said, music is really the universal underpinnings of it all and hopefully has gone a long way towards erasing those boundaries and changing (some) peoples way of thinking. We are also both super liberal, so the whole “anti” this or that just isnt in our DNA. Other than being “Anti-Anti!”
Q: Disco Music, a once popular music style in America was named after the word "Discotheque. “A French word that most Europeans still use to describe a nightclub. However, that word was never popularized in America. So, then Why the "Disco" in Disco Killerz?

Uri lived in Paris, and Berlin for years. I studied French through high school and college quite seriously, and had some amazing times at French Discotheques! There was also a yacht in the James Bond movie, Thunderball called Disco Volante, and it always seemed like such a cool word. “Discotheque Killerz” wouldn’t quite have the same ring to it, and starts to feel more creepy than fun. We liked the whole idea of “killing the dance floor” or “killing it” in that sense and hence … Disco Killerz.
Q: Young people often use the expression "You killed it" instead of the traditional "You nailed it" but given Disco's complicated past, do you worry at all about the negative connotation with the name "Disco Killerz?"

Lets take another example: The Killers, AMAZING band. Mr Brightside, what a song. I remember hearing that whole record, “Hot Fuss” for the first time, driving in a friend’s convertible at the beach, and being like WTF is this, who are these guys, song after song, just bangers with amazing writing, sick production and epic vocals. That was probably another inspiration as a cool reference and something that came to us when the name was born. If we looked at that as so literal, who wants to be “The Killers”. Thats kind of dark – even in a punk sort of way.

Bottom line, until now it never occurred to us! There was only one time in the past that someone asked us, in a very quirky way “do you guys want to kill disco?” But that was such an isolated and funny incident, that we wrote it off.

It’s unfortunate that for some, this may stir up some controversy – but we might be late for a name change? That said, there are sports teams changing their names due to the potential for negative connotations or offending others (e.g. I think The Cleveland Indians will become the Guardians), so we are open to suggestions! But hopefully, this clears things up.
Q: Other than music, name a special talent each of you have that few people know about.

Uri is fluent in reading and writing Japanese and worked in Japan as a translator for some time. I make a mean DIY poke bowl, but otherwise I wouldn’t put cooking in my list of talents. We both have mediocre tennis games, but working on it and hope to be able to claim that as a special talent someday! Might take awhile.
Q: Finally, where can people find you online? (Social media handles, website?)

We’ve mostly migrated to IG: @discokillerz which feels like the most music centric of the social platforms right now. Facebook and Twitter have never been our bag. Holly is IG @officialhollyt Twitter @hollytnyc Facebook @hollytmusic

On top of that, I think we really got into all this out of our love of music and we’d rather spend time writing, recording, and playing vs. “working our socials.” Of course these days, that’s a bit of a deficit, given how much focus there is on social media, as well as a primary platform for music discovery – but, we kind of stick with our interests and that’s music. It’s amazing what has happened with Tik Tok of course, but for better or for worse, that’s just not our medium. Our medium is music.

Holly T
Q: Hi Holly T! In a few words can you tell our readers, who is Holly T? (This can be over the top if you’d like.)

Holly is a DJ, singer, songwriter, an artist and a creator. She is determined, strong, opinionated, very driven and doesn’t take no for an answer. She follows her heart and always strives for more no matter what obstacles stand in her way.
Q: We know you’ve been featured on TeenMag, where they mentioned you are a British dancer and songwriter. Where are you based out of now?

Yes, I am originally from London, I moved to New York at 19 years old to study at Ballet Arts and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. I reside now in New York and both a UK and US citizen.
Q: Did you always know you would go into music? And why Dance music?

I did not think I would solely go in to music. I have always been writing songs but I never thought I would take it to the next level and do it professionally. I came to the US to dance and after graduating Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre started choreographing for musical artists, a number of them in the EDM genre. I was hired by a management company to choreograph for one of Randy Jacksons artists, I passed along some of my songs to the manager who hired me and he signed me to his publishing company and that was the beginning of me writing top lines for other artists.
Q: Your new single "Up to You" is sick! a collaboration between yourself and The Disco Killerz. In your own words, where did this song come from? Or what does it mean to you?

I wanted to hear some top lines from other singer/songwriters, Matthew introduced me to Laura White and I heard ‘Up To You’ and knew I wanted to start working on it straight away. We worked on this song for a year, trying out different vocalists on the record and throwing around different ideas on the production side, we eventually used Hayley Mays vocals on the song; she really took it to the next level.
Q: Congratulations on recently giving birth! Did baby Reagan pick up any musical skills while you were pregnant?

I hope so; from all the guest mixes I recorded at home during lockdown whilst I was pregnant I am sure she picked up something!
Q: You recently pointed out the hypocrisy between Britney Spears’ conservatorship and Bill Cosby being free, and we couldn’t agree with you more, #FreeBritney. Did you watch the documentary “Framing Britney Spears? “ What did you think of it? What would you say to her father? Or What advice would you give Britney Spears?

I did, I thought it was incredibly sad; here is a woman that has worked very hard her whole life and now has zero control over her life. It is almost unbelievable and sickening, yet we have a grown man who knowingly drugged and raped women and has complete control over his life because now he is free. It makes you question the kind of world we live in. I think Britney is an incredibly smart and strong woman who has been silenced for a very long time, I am sure she has a plan set in motion, my advice would be to stay strong and keep being as fierce as she always has been.
Q: Not too long ago, you posted a classic John Lennon quote: “Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans…” What does that mean to you? And are you a John Lennon fan?

Of course I am a John Lennon fan, my sister lives in Liverpool, when I was there last we visited the house he grew up in and I went down Penny Lane. Penny Lane is one of my favorite songs. Coming from a song writing background he is definitely one of my idols.

I think it’s true to say we all live in the future (or the past), even as I am writing this I am thinking about all the things I need to do tomorrow or the show I need to prep for next month, I think one of the biggest challenges of life is living in the moment, the here and now, just being present in even the simplest of moments.
Q: Let’s pretend you’ve been invited to be part of a major Hollywood film. If you had to pick one movie genre to be featured as DJ Holly T, which would you choose? A Horror film, Romantic Comedy, Action or Comedy?

This is an easy one, most definitely comedy, with a background in improve (Upright Citizens Brigade trained) I just love making people laugh and being a bit silly at times, my favorite comedians are Kristin Wiig and Amy Schumer.
Q: Other than music, name one special talent you have that few people know about.

Well, as you already know I was a professional dancer, trained at Alvin Ailey, in Horton, Graham, Ballet, tap… the list goes on. But what people don’t know is… I used to compete in Irish dancing when I was younger, both in light and heavy dancing. And… Oh yes, I can also lift one eyebrow up; yes I consider this a talent.
Q: Finally, where can people find you online? (Social media handles, website?)
