• Over at Jazz Estate, aMilwaukee has enlisted an eclectic batch of women to ease APT attendees into the final day’s musical portion (not to insinuate previous days were lacking feminine presence). Casual Vocals’ aptly-named construct of soothing folk proves a perfect pairing to those alternating between sips of coffee and beer. Between sets, we’re told all proceeds from ginger brandy shots will go to benefit Arte Para Todos. We do one…you know, for the kids! Our introduction to Jordin Bass and Amanda Jo Langley is impressive, as the duo alternates between instruments in a delicately dour set. No offense to Caley Conway, but we leave her Cukes-less set early to catch the end of Girls Rock Milwaukee success story Negative Positive in a BBC upper level that’s brimming with parents and others enjoying the beyond-their-years performance in the youth-rock outfit’s first bar show. • It should be a crime for Heidi Spencer And The Rare Birds to play as, well, rarely as they do. No one has a voice like Spencer, and her sepia-toned songs are perfectly realized by her band. New and old songs sound wonderful at the Jazz Estate: “Under Streetlight Glow” makes us remember how much we love the 2011 album of the same name, and “The River” comes complete with a surprisingly scorching guitar solo from Allen Cote. We bump into Jim Linneman during the set and share our appreciation for one of Milwaukee’s best singer-songwriters. (Also spotted: Group Of The Altos’ Amelinda Burich, Twin Brother’s Sean Raasch, Grasping At Straws’ Maggie Iken, the one and only Myles Coyne.) [MW]

• Though we loved the indie-folk trio’s spirit-crushing 2014 debut, Through The Dirt, Sunday’s opening set at Yield is our first time ever seeing Antler House live. Singer Sean Anderson endures some early bass guitar difficulties, but switches to acoustic guitar for the majority of the set. The album translates well live, and we’re happy to hear a few new songs with a heightened tempo—though Anderson is quick to let us know the peppy number we’d just heard is about an injured rabbit he’d found that ended up dying. Some things never change. [TM]

AntlerHouse

• Kicking off the night at The Hotel Foster is 18-year-old rapper IshDARR. The crowd is small, but IshDARR’s energy level is somewhere between “packed club” and “arena” levels. He has an easy, funny rapport with his DJ, and the booming “Too Bad” sounds great. Definitely a name to watch out for. [MW]

• The rock portion of Sunday night’s festivities at Hotel Foster is a mixed bag. Castle Thunder’s ambition is a step ahead of its execution; it’s fascinating to watch Ryan Rupprecht orchestrate his Theremin-like touchless synthesizer effects and hear a bunch of interesting new material, but frontman Cory Gorman has some vocal difficulties and the set’s a little shaky overall. On the flip side of the coin, Cavewives stick with a pretty derivative ’70s blues-rock sound, but their set is incredibly tight, and singer Michael Martin is in top form. We enjoy both sets for the most part. [CR]

• We pop over to the BBC for Holy Shit! and are initially captivated by a bizarre art installation. A canvass sits atop a speaker, and the sonic vibrations cause the pool of paint to geyser up in unpredictable patterns. Clearly no one here is on acid, or they’d be unable to tear themselves away from this display. The most hilariously benevolent mosh pit we’ve ever seen ensues as Holy Shit! plays a couple dozen of its eight billion songs. We are irrationally comforted by the fact that punk rock such as this still thrives. [CR]

• We’re pretty stoked for the upcoming new album from Surgeons In Heat, who play a solid set of jangle pop at the BBC, although the tunes lack the breezy vocal harmonies that we’re expecting. This is new bassist Ryan Reeve’s first time ever playing live, and if he’s shitting his pants, it doesn’t show—we’d even venture to say his playing is notably impressive. [CR]

• Back in 2010, Open Mike Eagle coined the term “art rap,” and his influence lays heavily on the hip-hop headliners at HoFo. Co-conspirators Safari Al and milo both perform a confrontational/confessional style of emo-rap with moody, glitchy beats as a backdrop, and they’re both disarmingly effective on the mic. On one hand, it’s occasionally frustrating watching milo focus so much on being his own DJ. When he’s concentrating purely on vocalizing, he can be one of the most electrifying performers the rap world has ever seen, but tonight his gadgetry holds him back somewhat. Still, some of the beats he’s coming up with are amazing, and he holds sway over the crowd with his increasingly unique style. It’s like watching an artist hammer out his identity in real time, and it’s an undeniable thrill. [CR]

• In a nutshell, Arte Para Todos 2015 was amazing. A huge thanks to all the organizers, bands, and volunteers who made it possible. It was incredible to see a true homegrown event succeed on all levels, and humbling to see Milwaukee support it every step of the way. Let’s do this again next year.

Passion best describes Jordin Baas the artist. A passion for musical expression and discovery so strong it could be described as incurable. This passion has driven Jordin’s spirit to rise and has instilled in her the highest level of dedication to her art. A place she shares in lyric and a melody and marks her break away from the rest of the pack as a truly worthy and original singer songwriter.
Her early career began spinning songs of youth and love lost on the blue collar streets of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, strumming a battle worn acoustic guitar and blowing home grown melodies thru a rusted blues harp. It was during these early formative years that Jordin began to discover her ability, as a gifted soprano, to delight all ages playing her home spun ballads, blues and acoustic rock at coffee houses and all age venues in northeastern Wisconsin.
With a natural ability to communicate her passion for all things musical, she won the respect of her musical peers at an early age and was made host of a weekly open mic artist showcase. With this new challenge she began adding other elements and instruments into her performances.
Having a weekly stage and audience allowed her to add piano and other keyboard instruments to her live mix. Having studied piano since an early age, the addition of this added instrumentation also helped her develop an expertise and appreciation for all types of music including Pop, Soul and R&B.
She was quick to work in this new arsenal of musical tools which also served to aid and broaden her already advanced songwriting skills.
On a never ending path to find her musical place, Jordin has and continues to assemble, disassembled and reassembled several rock, indie, punk and pop ensembles to compliment her solo abilities. Her songs can swing from delicate piano and vocal arrangements to full on electrified indie rockers with everything in between as fair game. Her lyrical content ranges from the uplifting to the politically savvy, and from modern social topics to traditional love themes. Whatever she’s writing or singing, Jordin always finds something to say and said in a way that audiences can relate to and identify with.
Regardless of whether she’s playing solo or fronting one of her bands, Jordin has been successful at maintaining a unique brand and vision. She also has successfully taken her sound to bars, coffee houses, concert halls, festivals, night clubs, picnics, pubs, weddings and road houses in locations like Appleton, Chicago, Fox Lake, Green Bay, Madison, Milwaukee, Portage, Ripon and West Bend.
Finding her way has been a long, hard road for Jordin full of challenge and reward. But as she finds her way and her sound we as audience members will continue to be rewarded with music and lyric. With a lifetime of future achievements still ahead expect to hear only good news about Jordin Baas.

Next month's Mile of Music festival in downtown Appleton just spilled into a fifth day.

Organizers announced Monday that a special all-female concert for VIP ticket holders-only will be held at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center on Aug. 6, a prelude to the festival's official opening on Aug. 7.

The two-hour Women Shine concert, featuring sets from five artists, will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the PAC's main hall. It will be hosted by two Appleton-raised musicians, festival co-founder Cory Chisel, now of Nashville, and Hillary Reynolds, now of Boston. Reynolds also will perform at the concert with her Hillary Reynolds Band.

Others on the lineup include Seasaw, a Madison indie folk duo, Jordin Baas, a Milwaukee-based singer-songwriter originally from Oshkosh, Wilfret and Miss, the Fox Valley duo featuring Nicole Rae from the Traveling Suitcase and Stephanie Tschech from Auralai, and Caroline Smith, a soul/pop singer from Minneapolis.

This marks the first time the Mile of Music festival has included a performance at the PAC.

Meanwhile, festival organizers announced 11 more artists for the festival and said the full schedule is expected to be released within a number of days.

The number of performers for the second installment of Mile of Music now stands at 211. The Aug. 7-10 festival will feature nearly 600 live performances at about 60 venues in Appleton's downtown and along the nearby riverfront, all featuring original music.

The final 11 artists announced include Baas, a singer-songwriter who also performed as last year's festival. Besides the Women Shine concert, she'll perform multiple times at this year's fest, including solo performances and a set or two with her band, The Quiet Time.

Also announced are special guest performers Mark Watrous and Jim Oblon. Watrous, who will be here with his band, Earl Burrows, is best known for his work as a member of The Shins but has also toured with The Raconteurs. Oblon, a Compass Records Group artist, has been Paul Simon's touring guitarist.

Others added to the lineup include Sam Luna of Chicago, Roger Jokela of Key West, Fla., and several Fox Valley artists — Art's Fishing Club, Mike Underwood, Jon Wheelock, Greg Waters, Walt Hamburger and Chris Jourdain.

Festival co-founder Dave Willems said the preliminary schedule will be out "within days" and noted that this year's festival will again be Friday-Saturday heavy but that all four days will see a significant increase in live music.

"Friday and Saturday will have music and education events from noon to midnight, but there will be plenty of music on Thursday and Sunday as well," Willems said. "Attendees won't be disappointed with the amount of music regardless of which day they can attend."

The Mile of Music bus will return for an expanded schedule, running from 1 to 11 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Willems said.

For the Women Shine concert, doors to the PAC will open at 6 p.m. Information about Mile of Music will be presented in the PAC's lobby.

VIP pass holders, as well as festival sponsors, will have access to the Women Shine concert. Individual tickets are not available for purchase for the bonus event.

Jordin Baas, 24 of Milwaukee, is currently attending music college and performing both solo and with a back up band.
She has many other side projects including a Pop/Rock group called The Quiet Time, and an Electronic project called Novelty.
Baas writes, records, and produces all of her material in her home 'studio'.
She enjoys longboards on the beach and can make a mean smoothie.
