Bio

Educator, writer, lover. Some may wonder why I didn’t lead with hip-hop or performing artist. That is because I don’t just perform an art; I am simply an educator who writes for love!

From the days when listening to music was forbidden in my household to the days of working with legends like Bunny Sigler, Larry Gold, Will Smith Sr. and Ashley Beedle to the in between times of odd or sketchy jobs to today where I am releasing my 7th music project: I have not stopped. I may have taken some well-deserved breaks but the saga always seemed to somehow continue. Why? Because I cannot be anyone other than myself! It would be a compliment to acquire financial reward or to receive validation from strangers. But I am who I have always been.  Religious restrictions eventually were no match for my purpose, whether it was to show young minds that they had gifts that needed to be recognized and developed or if it was facing my fear of flying and traveling abroad, or leading a 7-piece hip-hop rock band to creating house/EDM all on my terms.

BBE – Ramrock Records – Larry Gold- Will Smith Sr – Helen Brunner – Bunny Siegler – Frankie Smith – Ashley Beedle – Barry King – D Moet and others have shared or supported my purpose along the way. Collaborating with world class musicians and artists or sharing show space with Jazzy Jeff- Kindred – Wil I am-Gerald LeVert – Floetry - Cee Knowledge, Fat Joe and Black Thought have been highlights that I am grateful for.

My story

Sometimes we stray off our predestined paths only to be reminded of who we are. I hung in a few gentlemen’s clubs with my then girlfriend, making friends with the dancers and the DJ’s Although I enjoyed the fast life, I always felt something was off.  His name was Jermaine he was THEE hip hop DJ of the “scene”.  I would stand by the speakers just to experience the vibration rumble under my feet and rise up through my whole being edging me back towards my path to make music.

I began to use my music to transform young people, helping them build the capacity to push through trauma to look in the mirror of potential fearlessly. In the beginning I started with funk, African rhythms, soul, house music, hip hop and finally rock. Each experience connected with my soul providing escape, release and or joy! That is what I want others to receive from a Kameelah Waheed experience. Pushing them to let go and encouraging them to inspire others to let go and just be.
