Bio

Kayla Johnson was born in Coffeyville Kansas to Joshlyn and Joshua Franklin Jr. where she is the oldest of three. She started her singing journey at the very young age of 4 in a local community gospel choir where her mom was the founder and director. Kayla became very passionate about the concept of vocal arranging, so she became a student of teaching and directing choirs, as she continued singing. By the time Kayla was a teen, due to the serious passion for gospel music and great mentorship from so many amazing leaders such as: Dr. Mattie Moss Clark over the National COGIC convention choir and James Cleveland over the GWA (GMWA) choir, Kayla became submerged in the world of music. Her powerful voice and directing passion allowed doors to open for more opportunities in high school where her and a friend started a gospel choir, while participating in and traveling with the school’s concert choir and show choir. She continued with the same passion in college where she became one of the choir directors of the Delaware State College Gospel Choir, which later became the Delaware State University Gospel Choir. The experience and knowledge from her journey eventually placed her in leadership roles as the director of music for more than twenty years in different venues. Kayla is presently the director, for over ten years, of the Worship Music and Arts department at The Resurrection Center located in Wilmington, Delaware. On Easter Sunday in 2013, The Resurrection Center Cathedral Choir did their first Live Recording, which released in 2015.

Kayla is married to Earl Johnson Jr., aka “BJ”, CEO of KE Sound Group, and music director at The Resurrection Center. They have four children who are also heavily involved in the arts.

In 2010 Kayla began to experience personal challenges when she was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, which started to affect her mobility. Then in 2014 she was diagnosed with Uterine Cancer. During her treatments and ongoing therapy she began to write and record songs, which birthed a new music project scheduled for release in March 2018. Her two singles, “Belongs” and “Nobody”, comes from a place of gratitude and testimony to and of her faith in God for healing and sustaining her during this time of sickness. Kayla's understanding of music and life journeys continues to guide her as she embraces the expansion of her range and the challenges of a new venture.
