"5 albums from RI bands to put on your Christmas list"

Smithfield native Lauren King has a knack for writing songs that tell stories. They could be about going up Route 95 to see a loved one, personal struggles or just about the many intricacies of life itself. She does this with a blend of folk, blues and pop sensibilities, and her debut album that came out on July 24 is a wonderful representation of it, with catchy rhythms and narrative lyrics that make each track stand out. “Boston Song,” “Isn’t It Nice?” “Romeo” and “Wild Woman” are excellent examples of why King’s debut is a real gem. - The Providence Journal

Bio

Raised in Smithfield, Rhode Island, Lauren King is a 23-year-old singer/songwriter with a penchant for pairing poetic lyrics with memorable melodies. Her songs are odes to love lost and found, nostalgia for childhood and musings on the future. She began her musical journey at the age of 9 with the guitar, then was educated in the music program at Stonehill College where she sang a cappella. Today, Lauren is never far from her beloved Taylor acoustic, writing, recording and performing music everywhere from pubs to country clubs and anywhere in between.

“Music has always been my way of communicating with others, connecting ideas, and helping those in need.”

Lauren’s music can be heard in the films “Where Were You?” and “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.” Her newest release, “The Wolf is Back” is coming soon.

“The Wolf is Back” features 9 songs written by Lauren and featuring guest appearances by musical talents Chris Trapper (solo, The Push Stars), Gurf Morlix (solo, Lucinda Williams, Blaze Foley), Dan Hochhalter ( Dierks Bentley) and Sasha Ostrovsky (Darius Rucker) . Many of the songs on the album found their origin during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, when Lauren spent much of her time hiking the woods near her home. These walks in nature, while clearing her head, opened her mind to the themes explored on the album. One of those themes is courage - courage to face the big decisions in life, to decide who you are and whom you want to be. She says, “‘The Wolf is Back’ is about being brave enough to get lost and the self-exploration that comes from that wandering.” Lauren’s creative process is to approach the whole album as a long film, where the plot line continues through the songs.

“‘Wild Woman,’ is about a strong woman who is also in love,” Lauren says. “How to be true to your identity while still giving yourself to another person.” Another song, “Sweet Louise,” was written for one of her dogs, but she also sees it as an ode to “any female friend you need when you go through a breakup.”

“Isn’t it Nice” is about a woman who looks back on a life where her relationships didn’t turn out as she’d expected. She meets her younger self and longs for a time when she was innocent and in love. Click Here to view the video.

Lauren can be seen at venues all over Rhode Island, where she performs cover songs along with her originals.
