"Mellow reggae from Hampton's Micah Foxx"

Some musicians can't be fenced in. They bounce from one style or genre to the next, sounding perfectly comfortable with each leap. Hampton songwriter Micah Foxx is among them.

I first heard Foxx last month at a singer-songwriter contest leading up to the Aiken and Friends Fest. At the Victorian Station in Phoebus, he played a pair of songs. Both were good, but very different from each other. The first tune, "Oregon," was a laid-back indie-folk number in the vein of Fleet Foxes or Iron and Wine. The other, "Amy Jo" was a loud, stomping blues number filled with raw passion and gritty soul.

Foxx didn't win the contest at Victorian Station, but he did triumph at another round. He got to showcase his talent at the Aiken and Friends Fest in Smithfield last weekend.

The first recorded song I heard from Foxx showed yet another side of the young songwriter. "Vote for Love," is the first track on Foxx's 7-track CD titled "Love." It's an easy-going, chilled-out reggae tune.
