"NIGHT NAIL, BONFIRE BEACH, HAUNTED SUMMER"

Several young bands were opening the night that David J, of Bauhaus and Love & Rockets fame, was headlining at Los Globos on Sunday night. I am not sure to understand why promoters and show bookers expect people to hang around after 1 am on a Sunday night, but all I can say is that the evening turned out to be a long night of music, but it was good music, so every one should have stayed and skipped the bedtime.

I said young bands because they don’t seem to have already left a big trace on the internet while their Facebook page is very recent. Night Nail was first and they were riding the dark wave with synth, guitars, bass and the appropriate haircuts. Their music was certainly inspired of the 80s, part new wave part shoegazing but often growing into a big full sound, ambitious and empowering with groovy developments.

With this glaucous ambiance and lugubrious-morose-detached vocals, I can understand why they were perfect to open for one of the founders of Bauhaus, but I was even hearing some Depeche Mode in a more goth sense of the term. Singer-guitarist Brandon Robert, who kept his sunglasses on, put the cord of his mic around his neck at one point, as if he had some suicide envy… they were a bit mysterious, with songs titles such as ‘Tigers in Heaven’, or ‘Slaves to Reset’, ‘Modern Fluxus’, and that’s always a good thing for a band. - Rock NYC Live and Recorded - ALYSON CAMUS WEDNESDAY, 30 APRIL 2014 00:06

"The Echo Presents - Night Nail - Record Release party w/ Prayers, Tennis System, Magic Wands"

"This brand new 5-piece band from Los Angeles brings the sound of post-punk, psychedelic pop, and cold wave to the palace doors of guitar crescendo, synth-climax, and dark vocal denouement.

Described as, “Cold, calculated, synthetic, and atmospheric…” Night Nail’s music offers truth, fiction, passion, and existential transformation. Night Nail rekindles and rewires the post punk aesthetic into the sound in which organic, electric, analog, and digital instruments exist in harmony and balance. Brandon Robert is lead vocal, rhythm guitar, Justin Lomery is lead guitar and vocal, James Hendrix plays bass, Justin Phi plays keys, and Bryan Panzeri plays drums." - Echo /Echoplex - Los Angeles, CA

"NIGHT NAIL, TENNIS SYSTEM, MAGIC WANDS AT THE ECHOPLEX, TUESDAY JULY 8TH 2014"

Night Nail had a record release party at the Echoplex on Tuesday night, and it was my second time seeing them: last time they were opening for the solo act of ex-Bauhaus bassist David J, and this could not have been more appropriate considering the dark tone of the band’s music.

Last time I saw the LA quintet, they had left a new-wave-goth after-taste, with the names of post-punk legendary bands jumping to my mind, and this happened again on Tuesday. However, their sound was a bit more complex, layered with full synth swirls, sexy bass lines and tearing lead guitar solos at the top of it, leading to an explosive and ambitious full sound, ready for a bigger place. Frontman Brandon Robert had this super low baritone voice, and he efficiently used it, singing on a very monotonous-monochord tone, which accentuated even more the goth imagery.

The ambiance, like the light, was dark and dim, but it didn’t mean everything was only about shoegazing and new wavy soundscapes. As many bands that embrace this genre they may bring some reminiscence of The Cure, grasping the darkness like night owls, but like Depeche Mode, they were also throwing slow-paced dance-floor numbers making people move.

Detaching the mic from its stand, singer Brandon Robert announced a new song entitled ‘Nowhere’, a lugubrious dancing number, putting the cord of the mic around his neck, while evoking Ian Curtis’ gloom. One thing is certain, Night Nail embraces the dark wave whereas there are so many LA bands which ride the sunny surf wave, and it is always interesting to see that bright Los Angeles can inspire such darkness - Rock NYC Live and Recorded - ALYSON CAMUS FRIDAY, 11 JULY 2014 00:09

(andreas)

NIGHT NAIL come from Los Angeles . With their self-titled 4 track album , the quintet lays before her debut . Four songs full of emotion and melancholy, not too heavy invade the ear canals due to the dreamy melodies . Overall, the music reminds me of early bands of the 4AD label .

" Tigers in Heaven " opens the series . Whirring strings , plaintive drumming , seductive vocal chords , subtle tempo changes and crystalline sound structures determine the calmly flowing song . Conservative interspersed shoegaze guitars and a bit of Wave Rock with Western Feeling ( ala Lorries ) in the middle section provide atmospheric dispersals . " Nowhere" is working with a little more Hall , the voice moves a little more in the foreground , while the rhythm section supported by drums and guitars . The bass playing recalls his dark woofers in the 80s . In the aesthetic Klangkosmen sneaks a subtle psychedelic touch . Especially when towards the end a little slope in the velvet sounds flows . " Modern Times " conflated sent organic electric , analog and digital instrumentation to a unit that harmonizing the Wave Underground surrenders . Wherein the organic side even a little reminiscent of late Jesus and Mary Chain . " Slave to reset" is a perfect , dipped in dark melody pop song . Catchy passages , backing vocals , penetrating chorus . The powerful alignment with shimmering bass and siren-like synths , makes for captivating moments that offer here plenty of club-compatible .

Conclusion : The Americans will fit seamlessly into the new generation of bands , which are approaching the roots of Dark Waves and provided the nostalgic sounds with new ideas . The four songs on the mini CD cleverly vary with the attributes Cold Wave and Dream Pop . Because of the defining strings , you avoid the drift in to shallow waters and is home to the catchy structures always enough corners and edges . The voice is soulful and surrounded by a dark heat , which sometimes behaves contrary to the cool aesthetics . For fans of Cocteau Twins or Clan of Xymox . Successful debut. "Interview with Night Nail"

Interview with Night Nail
Today the premier of the Night Nail's video "Never Dream"! Who are they? We talked to the LA-based band -that we really love here on Are You High- and this is what they told us.

What could you tell us about Night Nail? Your career, why did you start the band, your style, your influences...

Brandon: We started Night Nail in the fall of 2013. Before that, I wrote music at home, by myself, for two years, and made a few videos with my friends from the LA band, Magic Wands. Those videos helped me find this band because the videos were a loose, beacon for what I was trying to do. Why did I do it? I'm not exactly sure. Maybe, I needed the attention or because I believe in myself and my art or a combination of the two. But, making music, for me, is way more than just expression. It is my therapy and place where my pain, anger, depression, love can safely come from the shadows into light; a kind of salvation and resolution to turbulent emotions. Influences: Cleaners from Venus, Echo & The Bunneymen, Cocteau Twins, Comsat Angels, Sad Lovers and Giants, MBV, Tones on Tail, Clan of Xymox, The Glove, Wire, Gang of Four.

James: I was introduced to Night Nail by our first guitar player, Justin Lomery. We later met at the pub that evening swapping stories, discussing sounds/music, and shortly, thereafter, I met Brandon. We went over the music, its bass lines, the meaning behind it, and at the same time, we got to know each other. It was a warm welcome into a project that I am still in love with and devoted to, to this day. My influences include, but in no way, are limited to early Cocteau Twins, And Also the Trees, Southern Death Cult, Asylum Party, Stiff Little Fingers, Reagan Youth, The Descendents, Bikini Kill, Circle Jerks, Chris Corner, Sneaker Pimps, IAMX, David Bowie, My Bloody Valentine, Sisters of Mercy, Specimen, Lords of the New Church, Slowdive, Ministry (Twitch & With Sympathy-era), Opera de Nuit, and Chameleons UK.

Justin: There is definitely a magnetism to what Brandon started which pulled several of us together. Brandon originally started the band, but since the band formed, we all have been writing songs as a band. Our latest song Never Dream really shows that effort coming into fruition.

Michael: Night Nail was already pretty well established when I joined. I really dug their sound. It had kind of like a gentle chaos to it. It really drew me in. I also was on board for what the band was going for. Influences: Clash, Nirvana, MC5, Django Reinhardt, and The Small Faces..

What's the story behind your songs? Do you want to say something with your music?

Brandon: The songs are just ideas that we come up, as a band.. some lyrics are honest and some are pure fiction. Both have merit, i think!

James: Oh definitely. The bass lines and ideas I come up with have a tremendous amount of emotion and soul, some from experiences, old and new, including experiences of others. I put all thoughts, feeling and emotion behind my work with no rules in the interpretation of it all. My soul resonates upon the touch of my hand on wood, steel and sound. Working on these sounds with the band entirely brings it to such a mysterious and fascinating light. The 5 of us can just hit a studio and play endlessly without thought and free ourselves from the constraints of the hour. All done in "purest feeling"....

Justin: For me, music is about feelings and memory, so its difficult for me to say what the song means without sounding like I was on psychedelics.

Michael: The songs are more less a tell-tale sign of how we as a band felt at that very moment in time. Song writing for us is very organic and personal.

Could you tell us about your new material?

Brandon: We have a self-released/self-titled EP that came out last year on cd/itunes/bandcamp, etc. We are currently writing material for a new album. The direction of the music has changed a bit, in that, we are trying to build upon the post-punk vibe we originally started with; it's a more layered and textured approach. I think that the new video, "Never Dream," accurately captures this new feel.

Justin: Writing good music is hard enough if you're doing it by yourself, and even when you are part of a band that plays well together, its still tricky. We can jam out an idea no problem and it sounds great, but translating that into a musical structure takes work, but when you hear the end result, you know it was definitely worth it.

Michael: "Never Dream" and a few other songs that we are developing are very sonically, lush. The texture is (ironically), very dreamy. The songs have a lot of color to them.

At last, could you recommend one CD, one book, and one film?

Brandon: Music: Be Forest "Cold" (2011), Book: "Crime and Punishment" by Fyodor Dostoyevski (1866), Film: "Scorpio Rising" Directed by Kenneth Anger (1964)

James: Music: The Legends "Public Radio" LP, Book: "Das Schloss" by Franz Kafka, Film: "Liquid Sky" by Slava Tsukerman

Justin: Music: Herbert Marcuse's "One-Dimensional Man," Film: "Troll 2," and Chase CD's have decent interest rates.

Michael: Music: ANTEMASQUE "Self-Titled," Movie: "House of The Devil" (2009), Book: "The Stranger" by Albert Camus

Bio

Night Nail formed in 2013 as a synthesis of music ideas spread back and forth via email from Los Angeles to New York. Brandon Robert, also of the band, Bonfire Beach, began sending tracks to Justin Lomery, former member of The Chameleons, on a whim, based on their shared musical background. It worked! Justin moved to LA and the rest of the band was put together, thereafter. Night Nail has just released a self-titled CD/EP, has five music videos, and is actively playing shows in and out of Los Angeles with tour plans for Spring of 2015. Night Nail has played with other local and national acts such as David J (Love & Rockets), Magic Wands, Miranda Lee Richards, Haunted Summer, Bonfire Beach, and Prayers.

Night Nail have been played regularly in the USA, Argentina, Auckland, London, Madrid, Milan, Paris, Helsinki, Athens, Bucharest, Adelaide, NSW, Spain, Russia, France, Belgium and Germany.
