"Getting to know Paper Tigers"

Getting to know local rock band Paper Tigers

Image

Former Otherwise member Jason Juadines and onetime Soundgarden cover-band frontman Danny Burrus teamed up to start Paper Tigers.

Jason Harris
Wed, Nov 26, 2014 (11:14 a.m.)

Lineup: Danny Burrus, vocals; Jason Juadines, guitar; Justin Cottle, bass; Julius Anglin, drums.

Sound: Definite ’90s rock—they all love the Foo Fighters, and individual members also cite Red Hot Chili Peppers, 311, Nine Inch Nails and Primus among their favorite acts, along with Ray Charles and Otis Redding. “We’ve been able to fuse our favorite styles: soul, funk and punk,” Juadines says.

Backstory: After Juadines left Las Vegas rock band Otherwise, he caught a Soundgarden cover band called Civilian, fronted by Burrus. Those two found Anglin on Craigslist, and Anglin knew Cottle from the military.

Name: “We spent 10 months writing and recording, [and] the name was the last thing on our mind,” Juadines says. “Our singer was at a bar, and a sports analyst called a fighter harmless, a paper tiger. The drunk friend next to him said, ‘I think that’s a good name.’”

Best/worst unchosen name: Danny B & The Douche Missiles

Next show: A free release party for their self-titled album, November 29 at Bunkhouse.

Why you should go: “It’s a variety show,” Cottle says of their planned 90-minute set. “We’ll have a beatboxer, an acoustic player, a conga player. Celebrate with us.” - Las Vegas Weekly

"Paper Tigers CD Release Party"

Paper Tigers Album Release Party

Haven’t heard of Vegas’s smash rock sensation Paper Tigers? It’s only a matter of time, and you should catch them now while they are still considered a “local” band.

Paper Tigers are releasing their debut, self-titled album at the Bunkhouse this Saturday, November 29 at 8 p.m. and are celebrating with free admission! They have spent the last year writing, recording and perfecting the six songs on the collection while earning a reputation for dynamic live performances and opening for legends like Grammy award winning Living Color and American Idol David Cook. They’ve also packed the House of Blues on more than one occasion.

The album has a distinctive rock sound that hints to influences of Foo Fighters and Pearl Jam, not surprising since lead singer Danny Burrus, guitarist Jason Juadines, drummer Julius Anglin and Bassist Justin Cottle all mention them as musical insiprations.

The songs offer a great range on the album, starting with opening track “On Display”, expressing the band’s exuberance of being back onstage after working in the studio. Their first single, “Given the Place” is manic and fast-paced while their ballad, “Everbright” hints to a softer, more emotional side that’s rounded out with piano accompaniment. A funky bass line kick in during “Flock of Fools’ while the catchy chorus of “Revealer” will have you singing along. “Bohica” rounds out the album with the standard ode to relationships gone wrong.

If there is one band we recommend you check out before closing out the musical year, get down to see Paper Tigers while they’re still live in Las Vegas. I can almost guarantee a national tour is in their future.

Paper Tigers, “Paper Tigers E.P.”:
Paper Tigers’ life-affirming alt-rock seems tailored for uplifting the spirits of triple-A radio listeners on their drive-home commutes.

This bunch would sound right at home on commercial airwaves with their earnest, well-executed attempts at locating the silver lining in just about any cloud.

“It’s a damn fine day,” gut bucket singer Danny Burrus announces on album-opener “On Display,” a shout-along rocker about hurdling hard times.

Burrus is a big-voiced frontman, and he needs the lung capacity to power himself over Jason Juandines’ muscular guitar playing. Paper Tigers temper such bombast with three- and four-part harmonies and occasional detours into funk (“Flock Fools”) and slow-burn power balladry (“Everbright”).

This is music for the masses, not music critics, but even the latter can acknowledge the band’s chops - Las Vegas Review Journal

Paper Tigers

–By Amy Nelson

Paper Tigers is a progressive rock band from Las Vegas that is definitely on the road to ultimate success. Formed in 2013, band members Danny Burrus (Lead Vocals), Jason Juadines (Guitars and Background Vocals), Justin Cottle (Bass, Guitar and Background Vocals) and Julius Anglin (Drums and Background Vocals) have combined enticing melodic harmonies with heavy guitar riffs to create the perfect polar opposites of music styles resulting in a distinct sound that is exclusively their own.

Singer Danny Burrus displays his wide range of talents by fluctuating between a slight Southern Country twang and intense Dave Grohl-esque vocals that entices the listener to want to hear more.

Paper TigersPaper Tigers have already taken Las Vegas by storm, including performances at Hard Rock Live, Vinyl, House of Blues, Vamp’d, and many other local venues throughout the city. The band has opened for Living Colour and also recently played the Rocklahoma Music Festival with Kid Rock and Black Label Society.

In addition, Paper Tigers have graced pages of the Las Vegas Weekly, No Cover Magazine, and the Las Vegas Review Journal because of their unmistakable musical talents and stage presence.

The group released their self-titled debut album Paper Tigers E.P. in late November, which has already received critical acclaim by their fans as well as numerous music industry professionals.

The single “Given the Place” is an extremely amped up tune packed with 90s grunge-era guitars fused with fast punk drum beats and Burrus’ powerfully driven voice. The song was featured as Best of 2014 by Laurie Steele on KOMP 92.3 Radio’s Homegrown Show.

The tune “On Display” is an encouraging song, motivating the listener to progress forward in life no matter what trials and hardships that try to throw you off the destined path. “Everbright” is a ballad that displays Paper Tigers’ softer, emotional side and true versatility as a band.

And “Flock of Fools” starts off sounding like a Country song, and then quickly transitions into an intriguing rock chorus with a lovely several-part harmony.

Paper Tigers definitely have what it takes to become a national touring band, and will hopefully soon be the next group of musicians from Las Vegas to reach superstardom. Be sure to catch one of their shows locally or look for them on the West coast this Spring and Summer! - Audioaddiktion.com

Bio

After leaving the successful band he had played with for several years, guitarist Jason Juadines recruited longtime friend, vocalist Danny Burrus, who's band had also recently split, to form a new band. The two friends were a perfect match musically. Sharing the same Idols and influences, they spent month writing all the while looking for the missing pieces to their band. Once drummer Julius Anglin auditioned, the guys knew they were one step closer to the goal of building their band from the ground up. After seeing Chris Baker playing guitar in a cover band at a restaurant, he was recruited to play bass. This foursome was christened Paper Tigers after watching Boxing Commentary describing a certain famous fighter. The Band quickly built a reputation as one of Vegas' best bands. Their crowds continued to swell as they played the best venues in their home city. The band was asked to play Rocklahoma in Tulsa, OK rocking the same festival grounds as Kid Rock, Staind, Black Label Society and many more. As the band prepared their debut CD, Bassist Chris Baker announced his departure from the band, and was replaced with Anglin's longtime friend Justin Cottle. Paper Tigers debut was released in November 2014, and the Single "Given the Place" was voted #1 local song of the year By KOMP 92.3 FM. The band is slated to tour in support of the album this spring. Paper Tigers looks ready to take over rock radio and spread their sound worldwide! catch them when they come to your town!
