"Can't Go Wrong With Porter and Sayles"

What’s the Asbury Park connection to Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania?

It’s Porter and Sayles, the tuneful pop duo who are winding up a month-long residency at the House of Independents on Cookman Avenue with a Monday, Oct. 24 show. Frank Lombardi and Emily Grove are also on the bill.

Christian Porter and Regina Sayles can play it fast and loose or soulful and serious. Both can sing like a bird and they play real well, too.

You might have seen Salyes around town. She's played solo at the Stone Pony, Georgie's Bar and the Soundbooth at the Asbury Hotel.

"I love the people here," Sayles said. "It's a beach town , it's a music town and I love it."

So far, their time at the House of Independents has agreed with them.

"It's a beautiful place and Asbury Park is so lucky to have it on Cookman Avenue," Sayles said. "You can't go wrong."

"Porter & Sayles Onward and Upward"

Singer-Songwriters Christian Porter and Regina Sayles first met in 2007 after they’d been hired for a marketing campaign for the American Music Awards. Their job? To be New York City street performers for a few days. During the campaign they started chatting and were amazed to find out both were based in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. Over the next several years their musical friendship grew and they joined each other frequently on local gigs.

It wasn’t until last year, however, that they first collaborated together as a duo. They recorded a percussively rollicking and joyous cover of the Sheppard song Geronimo, which showed beyond any doubt how great their voices are together. The two found themselves to be a great songwriting team and over a period of six months, worked together on an album between gigs and day jobs.

Sayles, who had been a solo artist, has a strong, lovely voice that at once calls to mind freejazz Joni Mitchell as well as smooth and smoky Karen Carpenter and rocking Sheryl Crow. Porter, who first came to the music world’s attention through a well reviewed 2012 stint as a contestant on The Voice, also performed in the clubs and bars of Stroudsburg and the surrounding area. Artists whose styles they both love include Sugarland, the Civil Wars, and Lady Antebellum.

Porter & Sayles’ self-titled debut was released this summer and contains 13 fresh, folk/pop tunes that are emminently enjoyable. In addition to Christian and Regina, who handle vocals and guitars, they are joined by other musicians on violin, viola, organ, keyboard, cello, banjo, fiddle, and accordion. The record is frankly great and deserves attention and airplay. Standout tracks range from the spooky I’m Just Gonna Go to the bluesy More to an achingly sweet Over and a song any American bar band can relate to, Free Bird (not the Lynyrd Skynyrd ubiquitous hit, but a tongue in cheek song about people yelling for it night after night).

They will begin an October residency at Asbury Park’s House of Independents backed by a 5-piece band, the first date of which is Sunday October 2. More info and ticket information can be found on the venue’s website. Other dates will follow later this year. Don’t miss them; great things are definitely in the cards. Keep up with them here.

Bio

Porter & Sayles, the collaboration of singer/songwriters Christian Porter and Regina Sayles, allure their audience with a crossover between Country, Folk-Rock and a side of southern crooning.  Porter blends the raw folk tones of Wesley Schultz of The Lumineers, the pop styling of Jason Mraz and the soulful, warmth of Phillip Phillips.  Sayles has a strong, lovely voice that at once calls to mind freejazz Joni Mitchell as well as smooth and smoky Karen Carpenter and rocking Sheryl Crow.

Prior to Porter & Sayles, Christian and Regina were established solo artists but after accompanying one another on respective solo shows, the musical chemistry between them was clear. Between eclectic instrumentation and lyrical collaboration, the duo creates a sonic fusion of pop, folk, rock and country.

Christian Porter jump-started his career after appearing on Season 4 of NBC’s “The Voice” and Regina Sayles attributes her success to over 100 shows a year and her very loyal and adoring fan base. After teaming up in tandem with their solo careers, Porter & Sayles officially took shape after they released their first original song “I’m Just Gonna Go”, which led to the opening of Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo’s 35th Anniversary Tour.

Their first full studio album, released in July 2016, is filled with substance, style and a spirit that captures their songwriting prowess.  Since the release of their debut album, Christian and Regina have opened for The Steve Miller Band, Frankie Ballard and performed their original work all over the US, including Asbury Park, NJ, New York City, Nashville and most recently in Austin during the iconic SXSW Conference and Festival.
