Bio
Blake and Taylor Powell are two multi-instrumentalists from Houston, Texas that form the Country/Blues brother-duo, The Powell Brothers. Raised in a musical family, but very opposite from one another, these brothers found their passion for music at the tender age of 12 (Taylor) and 15 (Blake) while playing with their father at their local church. It was then that they realized the power of music, as it was what became the common denominator that brought their different worlds together.
They went on to take a great deal of private lessons with various teachers which slowly laid the foundation of harmony and vocal arrangements that is heard in their music today. From investing their time in choir programs to building a 12-piece Blues and Funk band while all still in high school, proved their commitment to the art of collaboration and creativity with various talent.
Continuing on that path, they began playing, learning and working alongside well-known Texas Country acts. As sidemen, they've performed with artists that include, Granger Smith, Jon Wolfe, Sam Riggs, Grace Pettis, Tucker Jameson, Will Makar, Haley Cole, Aaron Einhouse among others. And they have played in venues and festivals such as: Dosey Doe, Luckenbach, House of Blues Houston, Love And War In Texas, House Pasture, Viper Room, Whiskey a go go, Webster Hall, BB Kings Time Square, Sunset Music Festival, SXSW and many other Country Music Festivals and Rodeo's in Texas.
After experiencing the way in which the local music scene worked as a backing band, Taylor and Blake thought it was time to embark on a career as: The Powell Brothers. They first toured in the beginning of 2014 and since then, have opened up for artists like, American Aquarium, Shane Smith and The Saints, Gary P. Nunn, Bart Crow, The Braun Brothers, Bri Bagwell, Uncle Lucis, JB and the Moonshine Band among others. After briefly attending music school, both have worked as Songwriters, Producers, Music Directors, band members and session players for more than 30 artists internationally.
In May of 2014, The Powell Brothers released their self titled EP, at Anderson Fair in Houston, where so many of the greats like Lyle Lovett and Nancy Griffith had their start. In February of 2015, they released their first full band EP, and are set to release a new cd in the fall of 2016. This new project showcases their greatly honed songwriting and arranging chops, along with the many lessons and stories they have accumulated from years on the road.
Their playing can be heard on numerous albums, TV shows, and movies, in addition to various stages as they continue to travel and perform across North America. They are influenced by their predecessors and peers, as well as the many genres they have experienced as sidemen – from Pop and Rock-n-Roll to Bluegrass and Gypsy Jazz. These ingredients coupled with their seasoned musical experience, and the brotherly love and energy they feed off of one another makes them an enjoyable and rare act to find.
