"A decade of trends that shaped Boston’s music scene"

Boston hip-hop scene launches national acts and local champions

There’s a case to be made for Cousin Stizz as our biggest contribution to the national music scene in a decade. Not since Passion Pit went global has an artist demanded this kind of attention. Not for nothing: Stizz became the first hip-hop act to win Artist of the Year at the Boston Music Awards in 2018, then repeated the feat in 2019. Although still chronically, ridiculously under-represented, hip-hop talent has made inroads at clubs, museums and festivals thanks to revolutionary art from STL GLD, Oompa, Cliff Notez, Dutch ReBelle, Billy Dean Thomas, Latrell James, $ean Wire, Brandie Blaze, Michael Christmas, Jefe Replay, Red Shaydez and more. Bonus cut: Worcester’s Joyner Lucas blew up even bigger than Stizz. - Boston Herald

"The Six Female Emcees in Boston Everyone Should Be Listening To"

The sultry appeal of Red Shaydez’s The Chillin’ In The Shade EP perfectly encapsulates the emcee’s alluring complexities. The usually optimistic artist is battling weariness on “Friendly” and her own existentialist crisis as evidenced by “My Conscience (My Own Worst Enemy).” She does, however, sneak in bits of joy (“You Like It, I Love It”). “Self-Care ’18” is a seemingly universal song in which Red Shaydez prioritizes her own personal needs and desires over everything else—and reminds us that once and a while, it’s perfectly OK to be a little selfish. - Boston Magazine

"WOMEN AND NON BINARY FOLKS RUN BOSTON HIP HOP AND THERE’S NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT"

Red Shaydez has some of the hardest bars in the city. Period. She’s the total package; absolutely gorgeous, an incredible lyricist and has the stage presence to match. She puts on a SHOW. I don’t know very many people that can rap over a J. Cole beat and totally own it and make it their own. I usually have the stank face when she performs because damn, she good! - Boston Hassle

"'Music is our Therapist': Dot kids find creative outlet in hip-hop program"

The program gives 14-18-year-olds a crash course in hip hop history, production, recording, and rhyme-writing. This immersive education is run by two Boston-based MCs — Red Shaydez of Dorchester and Imam “Flash” Bilal-Firmin of Roxbury — who draw from their own experiences as recording artists to introduce kids to their world.

“We’re like their label,” explained Shaydez. “We’re trying to show them what it’s like to be an independent artist.” - The Dorchester Reporter

"Boston Calling is in Allston this month. In Dorchester, there’s Boston Answering."

There will be hip-hop performances from Somerville’s Forté and Dorchester’s Red Shaydez , whom Cliff describes as a “hard-hitting lyricist.” He said to expect “powerhouse” vocals from both the pop ballads of Andover-born Photocomfort and R&B stylings of “disco and sequin queen” VQnC . - Boston Globe

"These Black, Queer 'Femcees' Are Changing Boston's Hip-Hop Scene"

When rapper Oompa recruited fellow Boston based rappers Red Shaydez and Brandie Blaze for a show on Aug. 30, she wasn’t necessarily aiming to subvert the traditional narrative of hip-hop. “But I knew I wanted performers who were adjacent to me,” she says. “I knew I needed black femmes up on that stage." "Red Shaydez To Perform at Boston GreenFest 2017!"

Red Shaydez is no beginner when it comes to music. Hailing from Boston, MA, she has been musically inclined since the age of seven (her father was in a rap group Killin' Field in the late 90's which introduced her to her first love: Hip Hop). Beginning her music career professionally as an artist and online radio personality on BlogTalk Radio (Red Shaydez At The Hour), she was able to learn a lot about the music industry.

Red Shaydez was recently featured on the "New Artist" segment on DJ Lord Sear's Show on Shade45 discussing her new release "Little Sabrina" that has a powerful message for all the young girls in the world. This visual has recently gone viral on various outlets.

Red Shaydez got nominated for "Best Female Rapper of the Year" in 2015 at the Underground Music Awards in NYC. Just year later in 2016, she became a mentor and advisor at The Hip Hop Transformation (a youth program in Cambridge,MA). She plans to become even more involved in her community in the coming months. She also released her debut album “Magnetic Aura” that received rave reviews.

"Meet rapstress Red Shaydez"

Jesse Atkinson: Give us some background info as to who you are.

Red Shaydez: I consider myself to be a free-spirited yet, well-grounded individual that expresses her art through music. 'Red Shaydez' represents people of integrity that stand for something. I am an independent artist who has had dreams of gracing the national/international airwaves and television screens since I was seven years old. Music is a way of life.

JA: What is the significance of your stage name?

RS: When I was a little girl, my aunt took me to the store and let me pick out any pair of shades that I wanted. The ones that stood out to me the most were the red ones. Being that I was an only child, I use to come up with all these alter- egos and that day I became Red Shaydez. It has a unique spelling because I incorporated my nickname into it which is Shay-Shay. Over the years, my stage name holds much more meaning. Red represents passion and Shaydez represents my vision and how I view things through MY perspective. When you listen to my music, you begin to discover who I am as a person.

JA: Who is your target market?

RS: 18-30 year old Men and Women who like lyrically-inclined but catchy Hip hop. Red Shaydez represents the alpha women who are educated but knows how to balance a carefree lifestyle.

JA: What is your USP? (Unique Selling Proposition) and what sets you apart from other artists?

RS: I stand for something that most artists in the forefront don't. I have the persona of a "rapper" but I have a deeper meaning in my music without sounding self-righteous. I'm all about balance. Usually with artists, it's either black or white. I represent that grey area.

JA: What single or project are you currently pushing?

RS: I just released a visual for my latest single "Serena Williams" which can be found on ChillinInTheShade.com.

JA: What is the philosophy by which you live by?

RS: Live life by your own standards. Live your happiness regardless of what it looks like to others. Be unorthodox.

JA: Which artists have inspired you?

RS: Aaliyah, Missy Elliot, Timbaland, and Nas to name a few. Those are some of my all-time favorites.

JA: Who does your production?

RS: I work with a variety of producers. I am excited about the Serena Williams effort because a female producer produced this record and from the hard-hitting instruments used in the instrumental, people would assume otherwise. I'm very selective in my beats, so what ever evokes an emotion out of me, I purchase the beat.

JA: What is your opinion of the current state of the music industry?

RS: The old me would have said it was horrible due to the lack of variety, but now I have to say it depends of how you look at it. Now there a tons of artists in the industry. It depends on your taste in music and what your searching for. People often say there's no good artists left anymore...there are--but you have to dig for it. You also have to be adaptive and learn the latest music trends as far as marketing. What once worked in the 90's no longer flies in '10's. You have to stay on your game.

JA: If you can change one thing about the music industry what would it be and why?

RS: I would bring back artist development and create affordable ways for artists to be discovered.

JA: Are there any singers that you would like to collaborate with in the future?

RS: I would like to collaborate with Jhene Aiko, Jazzy Amra, and SZA.

JA: What producer would you like to collaborate with in the future?

RS: Timbaland for sure. He is my favorite producer of all time.

JA: What is your favorite movie and favorite book?

RS: My favorite movie would have to be (there's too many to name). Crooklyn by Spike Lee. I have a film background so I really look up to Lee's work. My favorite book is My Sister's Keeper.

JA: What is your favorite part of your live show? How has it evolved?

RS: My favorite part is when I spit an a capella before my set even starts. My live show now includes crowd participation which makes it that much better.

JA: What is your website?

RS: www.ChillinInTheShade.com

JA: Any final words for the people.

RS: Make sure you watch my latest video Serena Williams and follow me on every social media platform @RedShaydez1. Thank you to all who took the time to read this. Peace and One Love. - Examiner

"Red Shaydez-Vibin' & Coolin'"

This joint is extra smooth. I don't normally compare one artist to another but just imagine is a trappy version of Lauryn Hill's " The Miseducation". This is real soul music with trap cadences. The whole concept of the song is about having a good time and promoting positive vibes.
This is a song that will easily cross over, becuase there isn't one person on this planet that doesn't enjoy "Vibin and Coolin" at least some of the time. Everybody from toddlers in diapers to grandparents (Possibly in diapers) and everyone in between can openly and actively enjoy. Family cookouts, the club, at the teen center, play this song anywhere.
It is very rare that someone can make a song like this and it works, but Red Shaydez finnessed TF out of this joint. This is super finnesse at its finest. Im excited to see what She has coming next.
The video showcases a bunch or beautiful cars, and even more importatnly, a bunch of beautiful people of all ages and "Shaydez".
I recommend this music to anyone who favors artists like India Arie, Lauryn Hill, Kendrick Lamar, Ab Soul, Big Krit, Nas, or Wiz Khalifa.
Pure Vibes... - Planet KXNG KO

"City offers grant to find local art venues"

“Shay known professionally as Red Shaydez, is a recent grantee of the Opportunity Fund. A self-funded local musician, Washington said money from the Opportunity Fund has allowed her to continue producing music and host events.

“The fund has impacted me in a great deal,” Washington said. “That $1,000 was money that I didn’t have, so it helped a great deal to be able to pay a caterer. I was able to rent a space and I was able to pay performers as well.”

Washington said support for such unconventional occupations is important, as artists make real impacts on their communities.

“Artists from all disciplines, not just music, we are what helps keep the city together,” Washington said. “We need a system to further our career, because unfortunately we don’t make the most in our full time jobs.” - The Daily Free Pass

Bio

Red Shaydez is a multi-faceted, boxer robe-wearing bully of a hip-hop artist and the queen of cool, whose lyrical prowess leaves nothing standing in its wake. She has a track record to prove that she is not only next but is now: the Boston-born lyricist, filmmaker, and mentor has been featured on MTV, Fox 25 News and performed at A3C, Hubweek 2018, BAMS Fest 2019, headlines her own local shows, and is taking the college circuit by storm with her live show and consistently empowering brand. She has just been nominated for “Unsigned Artist of the Year” at the 2019 Boston Music Awards.

She was co-signed by the legendary MC Lyte, and was nominated for “Best Female Rapper of the Year” at the 2015 NYC Underground Music Awards. And this was all before the release of her highly exalted debut album, “Magnetic Aura,” which as released in 2016 and went on to snag her features in notable publications like Boston Magazine, Dig Boston (who dubbed her the Coolest Rapper), Shade45, The Boston Globe, Thisis50, and ThisisHipHop Weekly, as well as several indie films.

The best part about this powerhouse is that she is entirely self-made, self-funded, and self-servicing. What you see, you don’t have to ask who’s behind it. Everything from street team to video direction, from album art to beat selection is hand-picked and Shaydez approved.

In 2019, Shaydez released her fan-pleasing EP, “Chillin in the Shade” and is working on her second full length album entitled "Feel The Aura".
