"If you like Adele, tune in to Julia McDonald"

Central Florida singer's forging a name for herself on the music scene.

A dynamic performer with an eclectic mix of originals and cover songs, Central Florida’s Julia McDonald is quickly forging a name for herself on the music scene. At 19, Julia has already performed at the SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas, Florida Music Festival (FMF) and the Millennium Music Conference in Pennsylvania.

I spoke with McDonald about her music, songwriting and goals. So, let’s “Shake, Rattle & Know”: Julia McDonald

QUESTION: Is it hard to find a place where you can perform your original music?

ANSWER: I play a lot of cover gigs, but that is because that is more or less my job. I do cover songs because the venues usually want you there as background music, but I let my original music shine at special shows and through social media. I have found that social media is the place where people are going to discover my original music, and I have been able to build an audience online who then come out to see me at shows.

For $25, you can hear Corey Feldman perform in Satellite Beach
Q: How would you describe your music style?

A: I have struggled with that, and I am trying to find the right direction for my music. I would say that my current stuff is indie/pop, but I have been moving more toward electro pop similar to that of someone like Lourde. My current stuff is not in that vein, but that’s what I am working toward. My first EP ("Gravity") was with a great producer named Brooks Paschal. I was young then; I think I was 16, and the music was more like a diary of my life at that time and appealed to a younger audience. I think I have progressed as an artist, and I have an older image now. I am only 19, but there are elements to my songs that don’t necessarily gravitate to a younger audience. I’m not going for a Taylor Swift vibe anymore, and I feel like I am starting to find myself as an artist.

Q: What is the most challenging part of trying to break into the music business?

A: For me, the most difficult part is the networking and meeting the right people. There are still a lot of places I can’t get into because of my age, so I don’t have the same networking opportunities that other artists might have. Again, social media has really helped me because I can get my music out there. I have been told I should do as many local shows as I possibly can to meet people and be seen, but I still think the majority of my fans have been reached through social media.

After 20 years, Everclear's more than 'One Hit Wonder'
Q: I notice you play a lot of Brevard County shows and your drummer (Randy Forrest) is from Brevard, too, even though you live in Orlando. What is your connection to Brevard?

A: We were looking for musicians, and Randy was playing a gig with Fundecided at the Baha Chowder & Seafood in Port Canaveral. After the show, my mom handed him my card and he called me the next day. We rehearsed and eventually I started doing some shows with them at Baha.

Q: Explain your songwriting technique.

A: When I was younger I had to be hurt to write. I really had to be inspired emotionally through something bad, whether it was a breakup or just something ugly. Now I am able to put myself in someone else’s situation when writing and see things through their eyes. I try and put myself in their place and write from there. When I was in L.A. I worked with a writer named Pam Sheyne, who wrote so different than I did, but I learned so much. I learned to visualize things and see things in a different way. I got a picture in my mind and then added details through words.

Singer Matsiyahu: 'World peace just isn't realistic'
Q: What are some of your longterm and short-term goals?

A: My short-term goal is to just keep writing, improving and to get as many gigs as I can. My longterm goal would be to move to L.A. and win a Grammy someday. I know that sounds cliché, but it is my dream. So few artists ever achieve that, so it gives me something to strive toward.

Q: How involved are you with social media?

A: Between my mom and I, we do it all. She does a lot of the Facebook stuff, and I do Twitter and all the others.

35 years later, Elvira's still spooky, sexy and funny
Q: What is the ideal audience for your music?

A: People that enjoy Adele usually enjoys my music. I guess I am a bit adult contemporary. - Florida Today by Mike Nunez

"Julia McDonald - Gravity"

Julia McDonald’s first studio release Gravity is a six song EP with an outstanding amount of variety. She emerges on this initial recording as a confident performer and writer who has an unbelievable mastery over the forms she tackles and putting across her point of view. The songs are obviously geared for hopeful commercial success, but McDonald brings a level of artistry to her performances and songwriting that makes this far more than just entertaining commercial trifles. These songs end up sounding and feeling like intensely personal statements that are totally accessible for any listener. Casual and devoted music fans alike will flock to this release for repeated hearings. She’s set a high standard for herself with this first offering and it comes out of the gates with a sense of purpose more properly ascribed to an experienced songwriter instead of a nineteen year old writer and performer.

“Gravity” is a title track that will linger in your memory after even a single listen. McDonald’s lyrical facility is very real and she writes about her experience in a visceral, deeply felt way that explores familiar themes with a language all her own. The songs on Gravity often have a genuine literary flair that never interferes with the musical experience but, instead, enhances it for McDonald’s audience. “Games” is more of a pure pop song than many of the EP’s tracks, but it deals with the same adult subject matter that she tackles in “Gravity” with remarkable sophistication and maturity. The rhythms and tempo of the song will undoubtedly hook listeners in and McDonald delivers a challenging vocal without ever betraying a single misgiving. She brings a wonderfully complete and well rounded talent to the songs on this release that’s practically prodigy-like in the way it dominates this material.

“Pretty Committee” is one of the best pieces on the album and has a sharp musical and lyrical point of view. There’s a more deliberate approach on this song than the preceding “Games”, but the track embraces some of the same commercial characteristics defining that earlier song. The percussion is employed in a much more stripped back manner and the crescendos have a stronger impact thanks, in part, to the generally more relaxed demeanor of the piece. “No Good for Me” is another highlight of the release thanks, if nothing else, to its withering emotional honesty. Few songwriters dare to deal with writing from the first person while also portraying themselves in a less than flattering light. The bitter realities of a dysfunctional relationship isn’t typically entertaining fodder so McDonald wisely contrasts the intense lyrical content with a sweeter musical landscape. “Something to Talk About” has a much more traditional singer/songwriter slant than any of the other tracks and eschews the pop elements defining those other songs in favor of acoustic instrumentation. The production is so keyed in to rendering the song clearly that you can hear occasionally hearing the guitarist changing chords. It has an inexorable tempo that picks up the pace in the song’s second half. There’s an exceptional, brief guitar break in the second half as well. “Simpler Things” ends the EP on an intense note and uses the electronic trappings heard on other songs in a darker fashion than any previous cut. Julia McDonald’s career gets off to a blazing start with Gravity and her potential seems completely limitless. - Growing Old With Rock and Roll

"CD Review - Gravity by Julia McDonald"

Pop music at this point is, in some way, pretty much comparable to the Modeling and Acting world as in its, first and foremost, a matter of luck for those trying to make them into these particular industries. This is because the lines for each are ridiculously huge with many hopefully trying to breakthrough. And so it takes, what it’s been dubbed by many, the X Factor – something Julia McDonald has plenty of.
Gravity is the 19 year old singer-songwriter debut EP and boy, doesn’t she immediately falls into the category of the best debut records out there? The material kicks off right way with the title track and McDonald right away establish herself as the sole star of not only the song, but the whole EP. Her distinctive voice blends perfectly with the traditional pop, Taylor Swift-esque Country heydays melodies. “Games” is more of a fast paced track, the acoustic guitar once again drives the whole song along with Julia that knows how to conduct herself throughout the somewhat speedy tempo with such an ease that only a few can achieve. Though the music somehow slows down and becomes a bit more visceral, the Orlando native finds its way to add new layers that turns a minimalistic track into something greater. The rest of the album is unsurprisingly both amazing and nor McDonald or the band falls flat.
There’s really no negative thing to say. The title song serves as an introduction for the record but I would say is perhaps the weakest within the 6 track EP, and this is me just speculating but maybe that’s why they place it as the opening tune on the album, kind of to get rid of it in order to keep the consistent awesomeness.

"Julia McDonald’s “No Good For Me” Named November 2016 “Best Song Of The Month”"

Julia McDonald, a promising pop singer/songwriter based in Orlando, FL, has won the SongwriterUniverse “Best Song Of The Month” Contest for November, for her song “No Good For Me.” This song is included on her debut EP called Gravity, which she released independently in May (2016).
“No Good For Me” is a contemporary pop song which sounds ready for radio airplay. The song starts off with a piano intro, and then kicks into a full-band arrangement in the chorus. The verses and choruses are well crafted, and the song has a distinctive bridge section which sustains the song’s momentum. Notably, a key highlight of this cut is McDonald’s strong vocal performance, which has a rich, charismatic quality to it. “No Good For Me” was expertly produced by Brooks Daniel Paschal, and Tavie Basarich played all the instruments on this recording.
McDonald, who is just 18, was born and raised in Orlando. She plays guitar, and she started to sing and perform live at a young age. McDonald has been inspired by listening to such favorite artists as Amy Winehouse and Pink, and she admires the songwriting skill of Ed Sheeran and Twenty One Pilots. When she was in the eighth grade, she began working with a voice teacher, who encouraged her to enter competitions. She also started recording at a local studio. In addition, she began researching the music industry.
Impressively, McDonald wrote all the songs on her Gravity EP by herself. She explains what her song “No Good For Me” is about: “I was dating a boy [and it wasn’t working out]. I decided to let him go because I deserved better than this. This song is a self-love anthem.” Other key cuts on her Gravity EP are “Games” and “Something To Talk About.”
This fall, McDonald has begun working in the studio with Kevin De Clue, a Los Angeles-based artist/writer/producer who has written or produced songs for Hilary Duff, Robyn and other artists. They have recorded two singles (one which is called “The Best Thing”) which will be released in Spring 2017.
Currently, McDonald has also been promoting her EP, which has received college radio airplay. She has also played clubs in Orlando such as the House Of Blues and The Social. McDonald is planning a concert tour of the East Coast in Spring 2017.
“My goal is to be sustainable off of my music, and to do it as a career,” she said. “With my music, I want to express a positive message. Things may seem miserable at times, but it’s not the end of the world. There’s a positive way [to move forward].” - Songwriter Universe by Dale Kawashima

Often with music, the pain of life can lead to the creation of beautiful art. And this holds true in Julia mcDonald's latest release "Gravity". Julia belts out a beautiful ballad about that feeling we get when strongly attracted to the someone. Feeling as though we want to float away into the clouds filled with helium love. But as that "special" someone tends to not be who we thought they were, we are quickly pulled down by the weight of gravity. "JULIA MCDONALD Gravity"

Julia McDonald’s song Gravity is a beautiful introduction to the singer and songwriter’s music. The simplicity of the music allows the artist’s voice to really reach out and connect with listeners. The depth of the song, the love and passion behind the lyrics, all speaks volumes due to the raw and minimalist nature of the presentation. As the song progresses the music builds up into more of a pop ballad, the energy rises a little, but the artist’s voice transcends all surroundings as it moves flawlessly from the gentle and intimate to the powerful and mighty.

The structure of the songs is fascinating and notably effective in keeping your attention throughout. These changes from the mellow to the upbeat, these break downs, these build ups – the song is so well written, and furthermore, every vocal moment and every instrumental performance ties in with wherever the story may be at any given time. The song showcases the strength of the artist’s voice and creativity in a number of different ways, and under a number of different lights. Her voice is up there with the best of them and what’s more is that it comes with a unique sound, a characterful tone, not affecting the professional delivery in the slightest, but bringing about something brand new and compelling to listen to.

Gravity is a great pop song. The structure is outstanding, as mentioned, and the hook is one that has an immense impact due to its placement within the surrounding sections. The melody of the hook is easily memorable, and the sound of the artist’s voice is likely to bring audiences back again and again. Hopefully there’s a longer project on the way.

"Julia McDonald | Powerful Young Singer from Orlando"

Julia McDonald is a powerful artist and poignant songwriter based out of Orlando, FL. Her debut single, ‘Games’ exposed her soul and style to the world while managing to preserve the 18 year olds incredible depth and honesty. In the past year, her songs have been performed for audiences throughout Central Florida, showcased at the 2016 Florida Music Festival, House of Blues “Orlando Rocks”, and were used to open for Grammy nominated Singer/Songwriter Andrew Duhon and Joshua Davis from The Voice.
In May, 2016, she released her debut EP, “Gravity”, produced by renowned producer Brooks Paschal (Versa Emerge, There for Tomorrow) in Orlando, FL. ‘No Good For Me’, a single from the Gravity EP received Semi-Finalist recognition from the Song of the Year international songwriting contest in August, 2016. Julia recorded her next single at Studio City Sound, (Studio City, CA) with Multi-Platinum Producer Kevin De Clue to be released in Spring, 2017.

De Clue, based out of Los Angeles, CA, began working with Julia after discovering her on Reverbnation, where Julia holds tight to the #1 rank in the Singer/Songwriter category, as well as, boosting #1 regionally, stated, “the minute I heard Julia’s voice, I knew it was a must that I work with her. I have listened to thousands of artists in my 20 plus years as a producer, and I can confidently say that Julia is one of the best”. - Dharmic Evolution by James O'Connor

"Music Review for Julia McDonald’s – Games"

"There’s a lot to love about it – it’s a pop song, catchy, memorable, but oozing character and originality. It’s a pop song that isn’t immediately comparable with any others of recent release, and her voice and her style have something really new and appealing about them. Let’s also get around to that all important and completely unexpected guitar solo. As if the speed and the good vibe of this track wasn’t sky high anyway, the solo comes out of nowhere, and just smashes the whole thing through the moon. Such a good piece of music, perfectly brought forward by a talented and energetic artist." https://exposedvocals.com/features/music-review-for-julia-mcdonalds-games/

"Julia McDonald - "Gravity""

Hmmm. Yep!

When I scan through my own mainstream collection of music to see what I might want to listen to, the process is a strange one. Say I get like, 100 new downloads…ten songs roughly a piece…I’ll check through them all in the late-night hours here at the studio for mere seconds at a time. It’s not an act of disrespect to the music – I just know what works for me and I know it immediately more or less…there are certainly qualities that I NEED in a singer and in the melody of a song to form that solid connection, even if I’m only listening to seconds at a time. Identifying those same strong qualities within the independent music-scene is largely what’s kept anything I say remotely relevant here throughout the years I suppose. The advantage of the independent artists/bands out there is that I’d never only put seconds of time into their work – I’m there for the full ride from singles to albums to videos & everything else in between…but truthfully, identifying pure talent still takes just as much time for me.

Actually…I don’t even want to give myself that credit…it’s not the person that can identify talent through the speakers that deserves the credit – it’s the artists like Julia McDonald that make their exceptional & stunning songwriting so completely realized and upfront for all to hear that deserve the real credit.

“Gravity” is the kind of sincere melody through that genuinely connects to us all. Smartly written with heartfelt lyricism that puts emotion in the spotlight, Julia sings with stunning authenticity and beautiful, angelic, graceful tones that contrast sweetly with the intensity & weight of the themes on “Gravity.” From its gentle melody in the music to the perfection in her performance – every twist & turn puts a spotlight clearly on the other main-element of this song that leads it to victory, the songwriting. Straight-up – this is gorgeous. I mean…it’s freakin’ HEARTBREAKING at times throughout the lyrics, no doubt about it…but if we’re talking about melody itself…vocal-flow…ideas…well then you’d have to admit, this entire song is a beautiful thing. When an artist gets a song this RIGHT…even when the subject is the soul-crushing experience of love gone awry…how can it still not bring some sort of smile to your face, know what I mean? Even if that smile is born of satisfaction or from being proud of what Julia’s accomplished with this boldly expressive new single…that’s still allowed right? Just because the words are compellingly sad & heavy in their sentiment and descriptions doesn’t mean we can’t all still be completely stoked on the fact that she’s truly nailed this song down tight in every possible way.

Absolutely nothing about this song I’d change from its production to performance – and I think we’ve potentially stumbled onto another artist with a very, very bright future here with Julia McDonald. You can completely hear how versatile her voice is…and if she’s already got this incredibly strong a grip on her sound, hooks and songwriting as she’s put forth here on “Gravity,” then mark my words – she will go far. I’m seriously impressed with the lyricism of this song and I’m even more impressed by the astonishing amount of connection that you feel between the words and tone in her voice – Julia’s put in a truly commendable performance that expresses the emotions and intentions in this idea perfectly.

Personally as a listener, I couldn’t ask for more; I love the sincerity in her approach and the honest, fragile-but-still-powerful way she sings this song. She sounds like a fusion of artists you love like Lily Allen, Hayley Williams and Sarah Bettens all beautifully & immaculately combined into one somehow. Every moment of melody in the writing is fully explored to bring the most out of every move “Gravity” makes – I think she’s written this one from a powerful & personal place…one that’s REAL with emotions, thoughts and feelings we can truly relate to and connect with. For a first experience with an artist, this is the art of perfection in a first impression and I’d certainly be willing to listen to anything that would come out from Julia McDonald now that I’ve been introduced to her through “Gravity.” Time always tells the full-story of course…but were you to ask me right now based on what I’ve heard in this stunning first single, I’d be plenty inclined to swear that Julia McDonald is indeed ‘the real deal.’ Gorgeous tune.

"Julia McDonald Destined for Greatness"

There are times when you hear a singer and you stop in your tracks, turn around and listen again and again, and again…because you just can’t believe that something that good exists or you just can’t get enough of those awesome vocal chords. Add to that fresh, original lyrics, catchy melodies, excellent performances and you know that you have someone that will be a star one day soon.

While searching on Reverbnation I came across Julia McDonald and the effect her voice had on me was astounding. At just 19 years she has the vocal maturity and voice of a seasoned singer and performer. I just had to feature this rising star on 12 Notes. Moreover I had to do an interview with her, to find out what makes her so good….but first, her story.

Julia McDonald is more than just another Indie Pop Artist to hit the music scene. She’s also quite possibly a hit songwriter in the making. According to Music City Notes, “She might play in the pop world, but her voice and point of view is completely distinct, identifying her as a true original in a world of imitators”.

"Julia McDonald - "Gravity""

Here we go another person wanting to do music. Just like any other person that wants to do such and such in whatever it may be. In this case it is music of course, from an up and comer named Julia McDonald. But she is more than just another indie pop artist, breaking onto the music scene, so her social media says about her. But does it stick, is she really more than just another one in the crowd? Well “Gravity”, is the name of her latest and newest piece of work and it sounds decent enough.

Julia McDonald’s “Gravity” is just like the title says, real life gravity, in which something in some shape or form is brought toward one another, causing this effect to occur of such feeling and emotion it is a real natural phenomenon. That said, though the song itself is like a lot of other pop songs by numerous artists out and about these days. It has that same flare of essence, like other artists ranging from Haley Rose another up-and-comer, as well as other acts like Moxy And The Influence yet another up-and-coming band, not artist that is hitting the music scene currently. These up-and-comer’s all have something in common with Julia McDonald, which is that they are all coming out onto the music scene, with their creativity as artists, and musicians, showcasing a real talent.

Stream: https://www.reverbnation.com/juliamcdonald/song/24934553-gravity

As a matter of fact, Julia McDonald is not only an up and comer, but she is only 19 years old, if you can believe that or not, that is your take on it. But she is not the only youngster to address her, Moxy And The Influence are another set of youngsters, standing upon this music scene, doing their thing just fine. Age should not define who you are as a person, let alone an artist or band. It is about the person and what they can do, and these young women have got what it takes clearly.

If that is not enough for you, Julia McDonald not only released this song called “Gravity”, but it was also included on her EP of the same name. That EP just as this song, is filled with such depth and honesty, that it makes the song that more captivating to the ear. Her vocal chords swaying the melody of the music, allowing for that tone of the music, to drift into a course of emotion, pride, and success for this artist as a whole. See how she is able to create a piece of work, that can sooth and move you as a person, it is what she has done with “Gravity”.
She has taken into her hands, an ability and skill set that she can develop and expose over time. Building up on her passion of creating music, just like anyone else that wants to do the same. Julia McDonald may be another one of those up-and-comer’s, but she is one of pure uniqueness and creativity. She is one of those to keep a watch out for, because she will raise up to the top of the charts in no time at all most likely.
