"KUTX Studio 1A Scott Collins 1-26-16"

With a 2014 ASG Award and 2015 SXSW showcase under his belt, singer/songwriter Scott Collins is already making his mark on the Austin music scene.

With a sound described as “authentic yet very modern”, Collins blends a variety of influences from the live music capital. Before going solo he sang with two bands, the first, a group called Suicide Pistols and then later Southbound Drive with an album entitled Agnes in 2012. “Marigold”, a single from that album was used for NASCAR’S RaceDay show and aired before each of the ten races leading up to the cup series finals. It was also during this time that Scott expanded into the world of music publishing by founding the label Side Show Paradise Records/ chicken Run Studios. In 2014, Scott released his sophomore EP, Sleeper, and now he continues to work on bringing his music and his vision to loyal fans around the country.

Scott joined us for a performance in Studio 1A on Tuesday, January 26th.You can stream his set here, or catch Scott Collins, Wednesday, January 27th at 8pm at the Cactus Café. - KUTX

Episode 543: Scott Collins Project
Hello friends! I hope you're having a great time preparing for Thanksgiving. Hopefully you're not fighting with family about what happened in the election and after, deflate-gate, is "Saturday Night Live" still good and all that stuff. I'll be heading to Houston to see the family. Plus, SKYROCKET!'s playing Fitzgerald's in Houston on Friday. On Thanksgiving eve, we'll be playing at Don Strange Ranch in Boerne, TX. You can find out about both shows by going to skyrockettheband.com and looking up our tour dates. I hope you all have a very happy Thanksgiving. I'm Thankful for all of you.
My guest for episode 543 is singer/songwriter/studio owner, Scott Collins from The Scott Collins Project! If you're listening to this the day it comes out, Tuesday, November 22nd, at The Mohawk here in Austin. Go to Scottcollinsproject.com to find out where they're playing and to get their e.p., Sleeper and more. Scott and I have a great conversation about working with the great Frenchy Smith and the legendary Hunt Sales, opening a new studio with world-famous engineer Chet Himes, his time living in his car and much, much more! I had a great time getting to know Scott. I'm sure you will too. Happy Thanksgiving! - Johnny Goudie

"KUTX Austin Music Minute: "Sleeper Has Awakened""

Austin-based songwriter and founder of Side Show Paradise Records Scott Collins used to be front man for rock quartet Southbound Drive. Their 2012 album Agnes (produced by Frenchie Smith at The Bubble) was getting some international press when – of all things – NASCAR approached the band and asked to use the track “Marigold” for a weekly race show airing before each race that led up to the Cup Series finals. That alone was enough to blow some minds.

But the vibe shifted. Band members went their separate ways, and Collins was faced with a major decision: Was it time to give it a go as a solo artist? The answer was an adamant yes. Once again, Collins went back into the studio with Smith to produce a new EP, Sleeper, applying more pop to the rock this time, along with something apologetically genuine and living in the moment about it.

You can see Scott Collins and his band at a special EP release performance tonight at Stubb’s, 801 Red River, on the indoor stage. The Rocketboys headline the evening, and songwriter Stoney (recently featured on the Austin Music Minute) starts the show. Loads of triple-bill awesomeness. Doors open at 9 p.m. Recommended. - Laurie Gallardo, KUTX, Austin Music Minute

"ACL Review: Scott Collins"

Scott's songs sound authentic yet very modern, and he delivers them with a sense of urgency. The music has that mixed-up blend of beats and influences that it seems can only happen in Austin. The songs stay with you, and that's a good sign. - Terry Lickona, Executive Producer of Austin City Limits

"Southbound Drive - Agnes (Review)"

Southbound Drive have been knocking around the scene in Austin, Texas, since the tail end of 2011, having cut their collective teeth in any number of other bands over the years. Recently, they released their debut, ‘Agnes’, a seven-song EP that clocks in at just under half an hour. And in that half hour, Southbound Drive deliver a genre-bending ass-whooping unlike any I’ve ever experienced before. There are definite southern rock and Americana influences, particularly in the guitar tones, the solos, the roll-n-thump bass lines, and the laid-back drumming found on the majority of the cuts on ‘Agnes’. But that doesn’t tell the whole story. Not by a longshot. The vocals make or break most albums for me, and certainly tend to define albums (and bands) for most people. Southbound Drive vocalist Scott Collins (formerly of Suicide Pistols, for those keeping score at home) starts things off with an emo-ish style that calls to mind Jim Adkins (Jimmy Eat World) and Michael Stipe (R.E.M.) in equal measure, but stretches out into an energetic shriek reminiscent of Lenny Kravitz then settles into a heart-stirring croon that is pure Ben Harper – all in the opening track, ‘Weight Of Love’. Over the course of the record, Collins’ voice manages to conjure up thoughts of classic vocalists as diverse as Kevin Kinney (Drivin’ N Cryin’), Miles Hunt (The Wonder Stuff), Chuck Ragan (Hot Water Music), Rhett Miller (Old 97’s), and Brent Best (Slobberbone, The Drams) without ever settling into mimickry and without ever losing sight of his own style or spirit – quite a feat. Meanwhile, both Collins and Ryan Goebel (formerly of At All Cost) unleash a double-barrelled arsenal of both acoustic and electric guitar wizardry on the proceedings, while the rhythm section of Lucas Griffin (bass) and Chris Saad (drums) impose a palpable sense of cool that makes it easy to forget they’re even there – because they keep things rolling along so tightly that every snap of the snare is indistinguishable from your own heartbeat and every note rolling out of the bass amp might as well be the sound of the air rushing by your head as you drive down the highway with the windows down on a humid summer night. With a debut as eclectic yet focused as ‘Agnes’, it’s anybody’s guess as to what manner of great heights Southbound Drive are fated to scale in the years to come. - TheImpalerSpeaks.com

"Southbound Drive “Agnes”: A Smalls Preview"

A staple of the Austin, Texas music scene, Southbound Drive is one of those bands you should have heard about long ago. Their music harks back to the more innocent days of rock, and imbues a lot of folk elements in order to achieve its good natured, mighty flavorful, and ultimately unforgettable sound. There’s no surprise that The Smalls is already a big fan, as we were a big supporter of their Kickstarter campaign. But soon you’ll hear for yourself why Southbound Drive caught our attention in the first place – they are just that good.

We were able to preview three of their upcoming songs off their album ‘Agnes’, and here’s our impression from the perspective of filmmakers:

Courthouse. We like songs that give us characters to imagine, and this one gives us several in one felt swoop, as though we are watching a long crane shot move along ‘the courthouse, in the rain’. The influence of folk is apparent – the tempo is upbeat, but the subject matter is about something much more serious and significant.

Marigold. This track sounds like something that Wes Anderson should use during one of his wordless montage or slow motions sequences. We especially like the use of whistling, the whimsical lyrics, and the chorus that we found ourselves mumbling like crazy people. This would be our pick for Southbound Drive, Unplugged.

Mexico. There’s something about this song that takes us back to the Reality Bites era of the 90’s, where up-tempo music covered up the aching of lost souls. Listen real close, and the words will reveal something quite special.

We can’t share these incredible tracks with your quite yet, so that’ll have to do for now. We hope you are looking forward to Southbound Drive’s big break, and make sure to follow them at: www.southbounddrive.com - The Smalls

"Album Review: Scott Collins "Let's Start Here""

There’s something sobering about the pairing of Scott Collins’ voice and Lexi Cardenas’ violin playing. On Collins’ latest EP Let’s Start Here, the Austin-based folk/Americana artist combines his smooth voice with rolling guitars and Cardena’s emotionally piercing violin. The product of this is a 6 song EP that sounds like it’s been around the block a handful of times; there’s experience behind both the instrumentation and the lyrics that’s still yearning to figure out the world around it. It’s enough experience that shows you the rough spots and hills but doesn’t yet see the flat ground.
There’s much discussion of broken relationships, misunderstandings, and missed opportunities. But there’s hope in it as well, or at least some kind of finality. In “Bones Are Buried,” Collins repeats to himself “These bones are buried / I’m coming home.” It’s a good reminder that no matter the amount of pain we are experiencing, we sometimes need to lay down the burden and turn away from it. There are paths away, we just have to look for them. - PlayListPlay - Nick Howland

"Ryze Up / Album Review / Scott Collins - Let's Start Here EP"

Most of my friends know me as a metal guy. The heavier, the better. What many don’t know is that my dad was HUGE into the contemporary folk revival of the early 90’s. I spent the better part of ages 12 – 23 (when he passed) listening to this music with him. After he died, I continued to keep up with his favorite artists (and still do). I enjoy them in my own right. Although, I hadn’t found any newer/young artists that quite stood up to the greats I was raised on. Scott Collins has changed that. His newest offering, Let’s Start Here, is pure gold. I had never heard of him before, but now I’m kicking myself for not finding him sooner. He has a wonderful voice that would do great in rock, yet it shines among his guitar/violin mixture. The vocal lines remind me of Lucy Kaplansky and Dar Williams in male form. Many of the newer acts I’ve heard tend to be on the bluegrassy side. Which is great, I like that too…but Scott gives me that comfort of bohemian coffee-shop folk. Like he was born 20 years too late. I relate a lot to that in my own acoustic music. The playing is fairly straightforward with some nice fingerpicking and the violin compliments it beautifully. The production itself is clear and well done, but not overdone and super polished. I really wish this was a full length, honestly. This EP takes me back to a place I really only get to visit when listening to those mid 90’s folk albums I grew up on. I feel my dad would have really been into this record, and that’s saying A LOT. - Colin Steele, Ryze-Up Magazine

"Exclusive Track Premiere: Scott Collins “For Now”"

Scott Collins has one of those voices that sounds like it’s been on countless epic journeys, full of wisdom and awareness and a longing for the stability of home. That aspect of his voice is front and center on “For Now,” a song about the passing of time and the knowledge it brings. Scott sent us an alternate version of the track from the one showcased on his new EP Let’s Start Here, recorded by Lindsey Kappa rather than Chet Himes, and we’re entranced by the potency of his and Lexi Cardenas’ collaboration. Cardenas’ forlorn violin is a perfect match for Collins’ yearning voice, amplifying the complex emotions that give the song its weight. Check it out for yourself and then catch Scott and Lexi tomorrow, May 30th, at the Saxon Pub! - OVRLD Magazine - Morgan

"Austin Music Minute: Let's Start Here"

It’s been a hell of a journey for songwriter Scott Collins. From starting out in 2010 with his bands Suicide Pistols and Southbound Drive, to penning a Frenchie Smith-produced track that was selected  for a series of NASCAR advertisements, Collins rode all the highs and lows in between. The drive and the passion for making music never fizzled. It was simply a matter of time before he would emerge with a new six-track EP, the soon-to-be released Let’s Start Here, featuring accompaniment by violinist Lexi Cardenas.
Catch Collins and Cardenas at their show tonight at The Saxon Pub, 1320 S. Lamar Blvd. They kick things off at 10 p.m. Recommended.

"KUTX Studio 1A/ Eklektikos with John Aielli/ Scott Collins 8.10.17"

After nearly 10 years of fronting both Suicide Pistols and the hard rocking Southbound Drive, Scott Collins’ most recent work strips away the band to focus on his incredibly emotive songwriting. Lyrics have always been Scott’s strong suit but his newest EP, Let’s Start Here, focuses that strength into a powerful collection of songs touching on his own personal experiences. In addition to being a talented musician and performer, Scott also works on the other side of the microphone as a producer and engineer in his own Chicken Run Studios. You’ve got several chances to catch Scott Collins in the next couple of weeks but you can listen to his session from Studio 1A RIGHT HERE! - KUTX 98.9FM

"KUTX Austin Music Minute - PennyFest 2017"

When Rob Pascolo and Sharna Haine founded Penny Loafter PR a few years ago, the PR end of it wasn’t at the heart of the matter. It was created out of their love of music. The husband-and-wife team from Australia, along with Penny Loafter PR partner, New Orleans-based promoter Dwayne Banks, are interested in promoting Australian and American bands to “bridge the gap between local and international music.” All of the hard work that goes with it – promotion, booking tours, social media support – is part of a bigger picture – worldwide exposure for music artists.

Naturally, Penny Loafer knows how to throw a damn good party. Enter Pennyfest 2017, the annual mini-muisc festival with another fantastic line-up of local and regional music artists performing tonight at Empire Control Room, 606 E. 7th St. Feast your ears upon all this: Girl In A Coma (headliners featured on today’s Austin Music Minute), Lincoln Durham, My Jerusalem, Emily Wolfe, Emily Bell, Darkbird, The Ghost Wolves, Slomo Drags, Otis the Destroyer, Cari Q, MCG, Chill Russell, and Scott Collins.

"Ovrld Exclusive Video Premiere: Scott Collins “My Old Home (Chicago)”"

Chicago has more than its fair share of songs celebrating it in all its epic glory but as a Windy City expat, Scott Collins has a more complicated view of the city that used to be his home. That’s on full display in both the song and video “My Old Home (Chicago),” where Collins reckons with the awareness that the city might have been his home, but he needs to move on to discover who he actually is. The video, compiled from tour footage by Rob Pascolo, has Collins working out those hometown feelings on the road, adding further universality to Collins’ song. After all, so many of us– particularly in Austin– have our own Chicagos we left behind, for better or for worse. "KUTXKUTX Scott Collins Project: “Something Different Here” Song of the Day SCOTT COLLINS PROJECT: “SOMETHING DIFFERENT HERE”"

Already a veteran of the bands Suicide Pistols and Southbound Drive, local singer-songwriter Scott Collins has been pushing through whatever life throws at him by way of the Scott Collins Project. There’s no debating Collins’ right as a frontman, but he’s recently returned to his roots as a solo artist.

Collins teamed up with his old pal (and legendary producer) Chris “Frenchie” Smith to produce Roadmaps, a five-song EP recorded at Collins’ own Chicken Run Studios. Roadmaps is filled to the brim with poignant emotions, deeply personal storytelling and honest-to-God wisdom (not to mention some amazing vocal and instrumental performances). Collins will be hittin’ the road for a West Coast tour but not before the Roadmaps release show this Friday at Saxon Pub.

Let’s begin the journey on Roadmaps with a premiere of the album opener – an appropriately-titled alternative rock number “Something Different Here”.

"PREMIERE: Scott Collins – Roadmaps EP"

Scott Collins has had the privilege of gracing the most famous stages in the “live music capital of the world”. The Austin based singer-songwriter brings a blend of indie-folk and Americana to the stage. He displays an authentic and emotive element that draws on personal inspiration, and is reflected in his performances, both live and in the studio. He’s ready to release his new EP Roadmaps today, and we’re thrilled to premiere it here on GroundSounds. The EP shows us in 5 tracks why Scott Collins is a name to remember. When you think of the term ‘Americana,’ this is exactly what comes to mind. His vocals, songwriting, and approach perfectly capture a mood and create an atmosphere that draws you in. We’re excited for this to be out in the airwaves and hopefully creating a big buzz.

In his own words:

“I’ve had amazing experiences working on all of my records but I have never gotten as emotional as I did when the mixes came back for “Roadmaps”. This was a journey 9 years in the making and I cant wait to share it with the world. And it’s only the beginning!” - Groundsounds

Bio

Singer songwriter Scott Collins knows the value of storytelling. And fans in Austin and beyond are listening to his brand of well-crafted Americana, so much in fact, that the Mayor declared January 31st “Scott Collins Day” in 2019. The artist is also a KUTX favorite, and the tastemaker radio station described his songs as “filled to the brim with poignant emotions, deeply personal storytelling and honest-to-God wisdom,” where Austin City Limits Executive Producer Terry Lickona observes that his songs “sound authentic, yet very modern. (They) stay with you, and that’s a good sign.”

For Collins’ last album, he teamed up with Grammy-nominated producer Chris “Frenchie” Smith (Built To Spill, Dandy Warhols, Jet) to create the well-received Roadmaps EP. The two forged a synergetic partnership and Collins added multi-instrumentalist Einar Pederson (The Fray, Kelly Clarkson) to create “the dream team” for the forthcoming release, Headed North. He reveals that Smith’s “rock genius” and Pederson’s focus gave him “the tools to get to the next level. There was a lot of evolution on this recording.” One example of that growth and depth in songwriting is the track “After The Show,” which was inspired by a conversation between Collins and Sweet Spirit/A Giant Dog frontwoman, Sabrina Ellis about the challenges a female artist encounters on tour. “One Sick Man” is a modern sea shanty about a sailor accused of witchcraft by a captain gone mad. The EP’s polished and rich production showcases Collin’s lyrics and dedication to in-depth songwriting.

When he isn’t performing, Collins is the man behind Chicken Run Studios, which he founded in 2015 and was designed by Oscar and Grammy-winning engineer and producer Chet Himes (Christopher Cross, Carole king, Marcia Ball). The tireless artist also teaches and mentors children in the foster care system through Kids In A New Groove, in addition to volunteering with Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM) and the SIMS Foundation, which provides behavioral and mental health services for musicians and others in the industry. “I personally feel I lived my dream the first show I ever played,” Collins explains. “I felt it on stage. In that moment I told myself ‘now it’s only about hard work and paying it forward’.”
