"SINCE ANTARCTICA Album review: "Aurorae""

Female-fronted groups often fall into the folksy singer-songwriter category, but quartet Since Antarctica is nowhere near that reserved. On its debut EP "Aurorae", the local band fronted by singer Shannon Woods wails with an unbridled aggression, plowing through five up-tempo - and incredibly catchy - tunes that instantly evoke the rock style of L.A.'s forgotten band Ednaswap.

Despite her role as frontwoman, Woods is hardly the band's driving force. The singly named Frantzie is responsible for much of the band's momentum, his fiery bass lines similar to those of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea. On album opener "Your Delilah", Frantzie's frenzied playing provides an urgency that's mirrored by Woods's anguished yells.

As forceful as these songs are, there's no denying the band's memorable songwriting, with tunes reminiscent of 4 Non Blondes and Melissa Etheridge. Woods sometimes slurs her words (the lyrics on "Gemini" are particularly blurry), but big, flashy moments like the hamony-drenched closing of "Narcissus Shore" make this a polished debut. - Catherine P. Bio

Described as “a force of nature” by fans, Since Antarctica emerged on the D.C.-area alt-rock scene ready, willing, and able to rock your face off. Their high-energy shows rivet audiences with musically sophisticated original songs performed with passion, virtuosity, and fun. Their debut EP, Aurorae made its release to a sold-out audience in February 2012, and garnered the band nominations for the Washington Area Music Association’s 2012 Debut Recording and Modern Rock Recording Wammie Awards.

Shannon Woods commands audiences’ attention with soulful, powerhouse vocals (no twee whispering here) and a captivating on-stage presence. Frantzie — the man needs but one name — brings an irresistible bassline as well as complex, emotionally raw songwriting and vocal harmonies. Bud Staylor and his stable of Fender guitars weave elements of Rock, Alternative, and Ambient music to bring intense energy and texture to every song. And drummer Chip Burden backs it all up with solid, frenetic beats to help ensure that each and every face present is thoroughly rocked off.
