Listen Up: SpaceMob SpaceCadets – “Melodies of the Cosmonauts: SpaceChronicles”

Jonny Leather April 21, 2016 Blog
By the looks of it, you’d never guess there was a hip hop scene in Santa Fe. And the reality is there really isn’t too much of one, but local trio SpaceMob SpaceCadets are one act that’s worth your time. Yesterday they dropped a new mixtape titled Melodies of the Cosmonauts: SpaceChronicles. Living up to their name, SpaceMob SpaceCadets, their sound is a bit of an alien alt hip hop along the lines of Flatbush Zombies, although much more raw at this stage, but with plenty of potential to build on. - Mecca Lecca

"Quadstock 2015"

Ridd Spac3L33 PRIME, R.E.D SupaNova Ronin, D Liteyear, the vocalists for Spacemob Spacecadets, talked about their extra-terrestrial origins and their message for positivity called Operation Breathe. “Its message is to make music, art, love, peace in any shape or form,” said PRIME. The band members plan on challenging the audience at Quadstock to create what they want to see most in the world, and to do whatever they love no matter what other people say. They identify as intellectual rappers and discussed their multi-faceted lyrics for songs such as “Mary Magdalene” and “Villain.” Both songs allude to violence, drugs, and sex, but contain hidden messages that people can find if they listen closely.
“We all crash landed here for a reason,” said Ronin. “We care about the planet, we only want positive messages around us.” The song Demension X is basically the band’s origin story. Members will also be doing a freestyle performance called point-and-shoot, where they point at a musician, and have them play a few notes. PRIME, Ronin, and Liteyear then improvise a rap to the music.
There are numerous other bands that will be playing the first weekend of May that SFUAD students should come see. All of the musicians interviewed thanked Caitlyn Brothers for the opportunity to play their music. In order for Quadstock to continue in its full glory and expand, there is also a suggested pay-what-you-can donation. - Jackalope

"City Different Fest"

Due to the cold, the crowd had thinned out significantly by late Saturday night but those who were still in attendance huddled around each other talking about favorite performances from Friday. It was no surprise to hear that a SFUAD favorite, SpaceMob, was still fresh in everyone’s minds.
Front man Ridd SpaceLee Prime, was still smiling when we sat down to talk about how the event had gone for his group. After saying that SpaceMob was ready to change the world with their music, and performances of all kinds will help achieve that, Prime said he thought the event could have been promoted a little better, but also mentioned, “I love performing, and whether there are 10 people or 10,000 people I’m going to be successful if I am on stage.” - Alison Gamache

"The New Recruits"

Malone, 25, says he loves what he does. In addition to working 40 hours a week at Engage and taking a full load at Santa Fe University of Art and Design, Malone leads local hip-hop group SpaceMob SpaceCadets. He developed his can-do attitude through numerous personal struggles, including two periods of homelessness in Houston and Santa Fe, and having dropped out of SFUAD twice, once due to financial issues and later when he had a blood clot. Malone worked to pay off his school debt, lost 50 pounds to address his health issues, and took classes at Santa Fe Community College to reduce his course load when he returns to SFUAD as a junior this fall.

Though recruiting is one of his primary duties, Malone does much more. He says sometimes students are more likely to share their problems with him than with one of the coaches, who they see as authority figures. - Andrew Koss
