"St. Paul Peterson Releases New Music"

Paul Peterson, or St. Paul Peterson as Prince liked to call him, has a new song called "You Got 2 Love."

He'll be playing a record release show Friday night at Icehouse in Minneapolis.

He was the keyboard player in The Time when "Purple Rain" was filmed and was one of the lead singers in the Prince-produced group The Family.

"Prince pal St. Paul Peterson drops funky new, Prince-inspired single"

He’s recorded with fDeluxe and LP Music. But Paul Peterson – or St. Paul Peterson to you Purple fans – hasn’t recorded under his own name since 2004.

He just dropped a new single “You Got 2 Love.” Not surprisingly, it’s a big old funky slice of the Minneapolis Sound, with lyrics about one love in this divisive, segregated world. The music and the message sound straight out of the Prince playbook.

You’ll recall that Peterson, fresh out of high school, became a replacement member in the Time in 1983, just in time for the filming of “Purple Rain.” Then, he became co-lead singer of the Family, a Prince-created spinoff of the Time, featuring Peterson, Jellybean Johnson, Eric Leeds and Susannah Melvoin. After one album (he sang the original "Nothing Compares 2 U") and one gig at First Avenue, Peterson exited for a solo career.

Over the years, he has worked as a teacher at professional music schools, toured as a sideman with the likes of Kenny Loggins and Oleta Adams, gigged with his jazzy family band the Petersons, resurrected the Family as fDeluxe and led the Minneapolis Funk All-Stars.

You can see how well-connected Peterson is in his video for “You Got 2 Love.” Look for cameos by Sinbad, Fred Armisen, Tom Arnold, Donny Osmond, Victor Wooten, Jellybean Johnson, Monte Moir and Prince’s sister, Tyka Nelson, among others.

"You Got 2 Love"

St. Paul Peterson, who played with Prince and the Time, is here to prove that the Minneapolis Sound is still going strong with his new single, “You Got 2 Love.” The song seeks to unmoor people from their political and ideological hang-ups in hopes that love will be enough to unite this divided nation. It’s exactly the type of message Prince would’ve endorsed, and to have a musician so close to his legacy spreading it makes this all the more meaningful. A bevy of celebs, including Tom Arnold, Sinbad, and Fred Armisen, join Peterson in his plea for one love, one nation, one groove. - City Pages

Bio

Paul was discovered at the age of seventeen by Prince, and was hand picked to appear in his 1984 Grammy Awardâ„¢ winning film Purple Rain as the new keyboard player (replacing producer Jimmy Jam) in the critically acclaimed funk group The Time. Paul contributed his keyboard skills to the group's platinum album Ice Cream Castle (#24 pop), and the infectious singles Jungle Love (#6 R& B/#20 pop) and The Bird (#36 pop). Prince, who had recognized Paul's talent as a gifted vocalist during the filming of Purple Rain, recruited him to front the burgeoning new group, The Family, whose self-titled debut was released on Prince's Paisley Park label. It was here that Paul picked up the new moniker, St. Paul. Generating the popular singles The Screams Of Passion (#9 R&B), High Fashion, (#34 R&B) and the original version of the worldwide hit Nothing Compares 2 U (later popularized by Sinead O'Connor.)
