C.D. On Songs: Sunshine Riot // "Cotton Fevour"
On 12.06.11 | In C.D. On Songs | by C.D. Di Guardia

It is December. Ignore the sweat trickling down your brow and remember that. I feel the need to remind you of this, because I am otherwise worried that you’ll be all “This show is on December 9 – it feels like I have months until then!” and then you’ll run the risk of missing Sunshine Riot’s gig this Friday night at the Middle East Downstairs. And then you’ll feel like a huge dummy, and we all know you are not. So pay attention. And listen on.

Sunshine Riot – “Cotton Fevour”[Download It!]

These guys try to trick us. Ok, maybe they’re not duplicitous; we had to expect some sort of to-do from someone with the word “riot” in their name. Yet they start out “Cotton Fevour” in almost solemn style, looking us earnestly in the eye and singing in soft, hush-hush tones. They even use the British totally wrong spelling of the word, to throw us off. Like that’s gonna be the whole song. As if! The track shows its true colors in a rollicking, rasping kick-ahead of a movement, and we’re all “Ah, so that’s how it is, Sunshine Riot. That’s how it is.”

The contrasting sections give this track a nice one-two feel, as if the song itself is going through natural progressions of emotion and energy. The key to this contrast is its overarching theme and sound – something that ties the two parts together in their difference; I guess that is why it is “overarching,” in that it arches right over the thematic walls you expect to appear between parts of a song that are sort of slow and soft and ones that are loud and raucous.

The song’s transformations to and from its two modes of being are clearly depicted in the vocal performance, which, while obviously being the voice of the same person, changes drastically to fit both feels. The quieter vocal presence is clear-eyed and softly intimate, whereas the rockin’ one is raspy, ranty and maybe even a little out of hand. The wildcard of the vocal ushers the song through its paces, and serves as a capable companion for the listener. That’s you. - Boston Band Crush

"Review of Sunshine Riot, A Fresh Bottle and A Brand New Day"

"Sunshine Riot is a breath of fresh for alot of us who just can’t wait for this harsh winter to be over. Maybe it’s a bit naive of me to put it like this, but the group’s mission is definitely clear... Definitely a talented bunch in my book. And I’ve read ALOT of books! "
