Bio

Surprise Attack was originally formed when we were all in high school. While it was fun to be in a band, we each still had a lot to experience before we could form the cohesive musical identity that underpins our music now. When we all went to college in different places, Surprise Attack went on a more or less permanent hiatus. All of us continued to make music, but more importantly we all listened to more music and saw much more live music. We fell in love with the things that make live music great: the joy of bonding with friends and strangers over a shared musical experience, getting to be a part of interactions between the audience and musicians, and witnessing live, improvised music that will never be played exactly the same way.

So when we all ended up back in the Washington, D.C. area, we reunited with the goal of creating music that is centered around collaborating with each other and the larger musical community. Surprise Attack is comprised of Danny Durazo on bass guitar, Tom Casey on electric and acoustic guitar, Ian Frye on drums, and Jeremy Begun on keyboards, with vocal duties shared. We harness an array of musical influences into an eclectic blend of funk, rock, jazz, and blues and are always incorporating new ideas into our music.

Our approach to writing and performing is driven by our appreciation for unique musical collaboration and a desire to always push our compositions and live performances to the next level. Our original compositions are largely the work of the entire group, and we allow songs and ideas to evolve organically resulting in a dynamic writing process that encourages unconventional song structures and constant development. We employ the same approach when performing live by allowing our synergy with the audience and with each other to drive the feel of the performance.
