"Meet The Brothers Burns | Lyricism/Beat Box/Illustration"

We had the good fortune of connecting with The Brothers Burns and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi The Brothers Burns, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Burns 1: When I think about risk I think about pros and cons. Taking risk is a huge part of growth as an individual and an artist. We’ve had some amazing opportunities because of it and had a few setbacks as well. But all in all we certainly wouldn’t be where we are now without taking a few chances.

Burns 2: Early in my creative career and adult life – I thought about risk most often as something that could potentially negatively affect me. Rarely did I associate it with something that could have a positive affect or impact.
I would approach risk from more of a worrisome and insecure standpoint – usually in regards to marketing/promotion, insecurity regarding public reputation/opinion, pay-to-play shows, etc. and how that would potentially be a detriment to us.

Now I approach risk with more of an opportunistic and confident standpoint instead asking myself: “How I could potentially benefit myself and others in the process.”

Please tell us more about your art. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?

There are a few aspects that set us apart – natural chemistry, a desire to collaborate with others, and genuine connectivity. We’ve met and worked with a alot of artist over the years. And often blur the lines of different genres.

It definitely hasn’t been easy, per say, but being open to collaboration and stepping outside the bounds of our ego and genre have proven to be key elements in successfully networking and marketing ourselves.

We’re most excited about continuing to grow creatively and to integrate all aspects of our creative facets and take them across the world.

Especially with a new album in the works. We have a great team behind us at See Through Records and are elated to see this next project to fruition.

What have we learned along the way? If we stick together we can do ANYTHING, DO NOT do pay-to-play shows, and learn to play nicely with others – inside and outside your genres and mediums. Trust your gut and don’t be afraid to take a chance.

Our brand is built on genuine connectivity. We’re about as grass roots as it gets, and believe in building up ourselves as well as everyone around us. One of us wins, all of us win.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We love to host. These would be some highlights of a week long endeavor with The Brothers Burns….

We’d hit the standard tourist spots, Balboa Park/Zoo, Seaport Village maybe take a day trip to Disneyland.

We’d give them a taste of San Diego nightlife, maybe Rosie O’ Grady’s, Rabbit Hole, Music Box or Belly Up to see a live show.

We’d hit some of our favorite places to imbibe delicious libations and consume tasty morsels. Harney Sushi, Costa Brava and Polite Provisions perhaps. There’s so many to choose from.

It wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t take our friends to see the fam for a home cooked meal and night full of laughs and good conversation.

Of course music. Lots of music. San Diego has no shortage of talent and exciting people. Mimi Zulu, XIV, Rob Deez and Sister Speak to name a few. That right there would be a dream concert!

Maybe end the week with a local camping trip and take in the fresh air before coming back to reality lol.

Or something like that.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Burns 1: First shout out is to my mom for introducing me to so much good music when I was a kid. She is the reason for my eclectic taste in music.

To all our family and friends that have supported our artistic endeavors throughout the years. All our fellow nerds. And to the many musicians we’ve been blessed to work with throughout the years.

Burns 2: All of our family members who have encouraged our crafts – particularly our mother, and aunt and uncle. Anyone who ever pushed me out of my comfort zone to share my music and artwork.

Burns 1 & 2:

All the promoters and venues that gave us a shot when a lot wouldn’t.
Specifically Shawn Balch of Tin Roof, Alma Rodriguez of Queen Bee, Danielle LoPresti of Indiefest, Ken Rexrhode of the Six String Society, Miguel from Rabbit Hole, and of course the fine folks of Rosie O’ Grady’s.

Definitely to anyone who’s ever collaborated with us Verdell Smith of Soul Ablaze, Sister Speak, the artists formerly known as Chill Clinton, Mimi Zulu & Crew, XIV and last but not least our Record label- See Through Records.

From their flow to the stage show The Brothers Burns aim to entertain and engage. Whether it's your first or fiftieth hip hop show, this trio (Burns One, Burns Two and DJ Redlite) out of San Diego will leave you with a smile on your face. From dive bars, to festivals, living rooms to the tops of moving buses, you name it and they've played it. And if not, then put it on the bucket list!

Their influences run the gamut of old school hip hop, funk,
Motown, and R&B to classic rock, classical, electronic, and more. They
draw inspiration from everyday life experiences, prior/current events,
social/economic happenings, and the abstract to provide an artistic and
rhythmic commentary complete with lyricism, beat boxing, and live
turntablism.

With the See Through Records team behind them, & DJ Redlite bringing an arsenal of eclectic sounds, The Brothers Burns have their sights set on the stars. There's a reason they were voted Best Hip Hop and Rap Artist at the 2023 San Diego Music Awards. If you want to find out why, go see them live. And stay tuned for their first studio album dropping November, 2023 on See Through Records.
