"RVA Mag"

“The Northerners mix the sentimental sounds of classic rock and roll with twists of modern folk and gritty contemporary blues. While far from being classified as a “jam band”, The Northerners keep their audiences on their toes by intertwining both improvised and composed interludes between songs – every show is guaranteed to be unique.” - RVA Magazine

"The Deli Magazine"

"The soulful vocals of Ally Khoury bring a fullness to the already layered sound of guitar riffs, creating a modern indie rock sound to The Northerners' new EP Virginia." - The Deli Magazine

"'Virginia' Song Review"

"The backing instrumentation is the first thing you notice listening to this song. The piano and organ are phenomenal. Singer Justin Khoury comes in with his raspy, soulful voice that works well with this type of ballad-y Rock song. The soaring vocals are pleasing to the ear, and the emotion of his singing hooks you. The backing music is not overwhelming and perfectly highlights the vocals. Towards the middle of the song, the tempo picks up and the piano and organ is really highlighted here. Sister Ally Khoury comes in with her vocals, which sound very similar to her brother’s. The same soulful raspy voice but with a higher range. She hits all the high notes and her powerful voice shines. It’s a powerful roller coaster of sound and great vocals that you wish would last just a little longer.

The Northerners have a great Rock/Bluesy sound that is refreshing to hear in this day and age of manufactured “Rock” music, and bands that are more Pop than true Rock. The song “Virginia” showcases what this band is about—good music and loads of talent. This band has a lot to offer, and hopefully will have more good music to come." - Amped Sounds

"Dingus"

"But I say this: You can drive down the freeway rocking out to the Virginia EP and you’d be way more of a badass than you would listening to any Skrillex album(...) In fact, the coolest people our generation has to offer know that it’s this kind of music that actually touches their heart." - Dingus (DIY Music Blog)

"'Virginia EP' Review"

"If you didn’t already know, The Northerners have released their first EP of six insta-classic roots rock tunes. Those not familiar with the band will be struck by the rapport that singers Justin Khoury and sister Ally “Janis” Khoury share. You can just tell these two grew up playing music together. They have a certain swagger or accent in their voices that translates really well live. If you aren’t already blown away by Allman Bros-esque “You,” chances are you’ll be won over by this version. Ally’s layered vocals offer an immediacy which engages the listener. There’s a light-hearted “ooh hoo!” that underlines the laid-back flavor to the sounds. Guitar by Taylor Laub might make you swear Trey Anastasio guested on the EP.

"Valerie" turns up the honky tonk to ten, and the country vibe exudes from Justin’s lead vocals. "Don’t Play" sees Ally with attitude and some stride piano goodness.

Check out “Hound Pound” for a string band track rife with danceable licks and kicks. The country revival aspect is apparent with the group chorus, the two-step rhythm, and the traditional-sounding lyrics. “I’m going out with a bottle in my hand… “

Lastly, “Virginia” will cause any lost soul to get teary eyed, with influences from The Band, Fleetwood Mac, and more. Try to contain your enthusiasm during the climax of this tune, because it’s really moving." - Sounds Of RVA

"Magnus Music"

"Richmond, VA’s not shy on talent, but on the upper echelon of the scene, the Northerners stand. Combining indie and folk with rock and roll and a shade of the blues, this seasoned group of musicians pack an outstanding live set full of the sounds of yesterday's soul heroes with today’s indie-folk movement." - Magnus Music

Bio

As you hear brother and sister, Ally and Justin Khoury, belt the lyrics to ‘Train’, one can’t help but feel the rumble and power of the locomotion called ‘The Northerners’. The soul-filling rhythms of classic rock are paraded off the main drag on to unforeseen paths, linking up with the future, past, and present sounds of folk and blues. The Northerners are old timey, new timey, and no timey.

They push forward from the high water mark founded from the great deliverers of soul – each member rolling his or her own rhythmic train into the musical station. Every performance is unique – not the meandering noodle of a jam, but an extraordinary display of musicianship in live explorations of original tracks.
