"The SJ Syndicate revives nostalgia, rocks hard on Band of Brothers"

I can get behind these guys - anytime.

Born from the traditions of Van Halen, Hendrix, Mudhoney and many more, SJ Syndicate is helmed by Phil Greene (Vocals), Eric Croak (Guitars), Jeff Blackburn (Drums), and Alvin Gatewood (Bass). The SJS specialize in the swagger of hard rock from the 80s and 90s - their latest release “Band of Brothers” replicates some of the era’s greatest moments, while giving listeners a brand new take on old themes. I’m harkened back to that glorious time when hard rock gave way to grunge - when Def Leppard and Pearl Jam both ruled the radio top 40s chart.

You’d be deaf not to hear the Sammy Hagar-esque feel of “In Her Eyes,” or the melodic sentiment of a late 80s Van Halen. (Personally my favorite track off the collection.) The SJ Syndicate knocks it out of the park with thick harmonies, blistering yet melodic solos, and the hidden sentiment behind Green’s vocals. The Bon Jovi/Extreme balladeering of “Breathe Again” and “Goldilox” expands the acts stylistic range, while the almost psychedelic rock chops of “Which Way” pushes the quartet’s appeal to an even wider circle of listeners, with Hendrix-style guitars acid blues riffage. “You’re Just a Psycho, But I Love You” (think Mudhoney’s “Touch Me, I’m Sick”) and “Mind Trip” beckos a grungier post punk, slant, while “Rust”and “EZ Livin'" takes a bald-faced stab at early 90s groove rock, with a hair-metal-for-grown-ups sort of allure.

My only gripe with “Band of Brothers” is that it’s too effin’ short - a gripe that takes a more complementary nuance. Though the 8-song set has plenty to chew on, my Gen X nostalgia has been awakened, and begs for more. The SJ Syndicate takes nostalgia to a new level, while crafting new riffs on timeless themes.

If I were the grading type, I’d give The SJ Syndicate a thoroughly nostalgic 5 stars.
