Rock & Blues To Fill Dunedin’s Pioneer Park For Taste of Dunedin on Sunday, Sept. 14

While the food is the thing at the Taste of Dunedin from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 14, you won’t want to miss the live music at Pioneer Park that will continue throughout the entire afternoon. It’ll be a rockin’ opportunity to hear some great music, performed by two outstanding groups, The Time Bandits and Alex Lopez Xpress.

The Time Bandits have become known as Tampa Bay’s “Most Wanted” Rock & Roll Band. Lead vocalist Brad Holcomb fronts a six-member Time Bandits unit that plays virtually every type of popular music, creating a versatile sonic presence that’s not necessarily loud, but BIG. They are a favorite on the Tampa Bay festival circuit, bringing lots of excitement and fun whenever they perform. Their full arsenal of guitars, bass, keys and percussion, along with three back-up vocalists will have the Park rocking and a-rolling!

Alex Lopez Xpress is the other Tampa performer who will appear on stage during Taste of Dunedin. After starting his musical career in the heartland of Rock ‘n’ Roll in Cleveland and learning how to play guitar in a style influenced by Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton, Alex came to Florida to attend college. He took a break from his music career to raise a family but expanded his musical roots by studying the guitar style of blues greats like BB King, Albert Collins and Buddy Guy. He also took time to write and record his own original material.
Now back with his Alex Lopez Xpress, Lopez is taking the music scene by storm with a unique blend of blues and rock and roll that culminated in his first full album, “Back Bedroom Blues.” It is a collection of rocking original blues, filled with passionate guitar work, strong vocal performances and great melodies that have been getting rave reviews.

“Taste of Dunedin” is set for Sunday, Sept. 14, from 1 to 5 p.m. In addition to some delicious offerings prepared by famed Dunedin restaurants, this year’s event will include live music in Pioneer Park throughout the afternoon and arts and crafts booths and demonstrations along Main Street in Dunedin for people to enjoy as they walk in Florida’s “most walkable city.”
Everyone who purchases tickets for Taste of Dunedin, either in Pioneer Park on the day of the event or online at www.TasteofDunedin.com will have an opportunity to register to win some great prizes including a three-day, two night stay in the Penthouse Suite at Beso Del Sol Resort.

All of Dunedin’s fine restaurants have been invited to participate in Taste. Since the event is sponsored by the Downtown Dunedin’s Merchants Association (DDMA), many of Dunedin’s outstanding Boutique Shops will have Taste items available along with information about the restaurants around town that have prepared the delicious foods. Of course, the Main Street Dunedin restaurants will have their own Taste samples available, too. Proceeds of “Taste” will help DDMA produce future events during 2014.

DUNEDIN — It can be hard to visualize now, but decades ago agriculture and Pinellas County went hand in hand.

Citrus groves stretched throughout the northern portion of the peninsula, and that history will be celebrated Saturday at the Dunedin Orange Festival.

For the sixth year running, the Dunedin Historical Museum and Dunedin Chamber Foundation will present a daylong fundraising event at Edgewater Park. Proceeds benefit the museum and its mission to educate and preserve the community’s cultural heritage.

The all ages event features plenty of food, drinks, entertainment and, of course, oranges.

Indian River Select Premium Juice is a lead sponsor and opens the festival with a orange juice sampling at 10 a.m.

Guests will be treated to a Mojo Cookoff Contest, pitting local restaurants against one another, and plenty of other food options from vendors.

A new adult-geared Orange Fest After Dark portion is being launched this year, with craft beer and wine, live music, sunset viewing at the marina and more.

Local bands will set the mood nearly all day. Jack and Josie, the Time Bandits, 6 Volt Rodeo and the Shakes Society are all scheduled to be on stage at the park.

Another tradition created by the festival is the crowning of Dunedin Orange Queen. The Queen is selected at a separate event, Thursday at Mease Manor.

Other activities and games include Spin to Win games, a Fun Zone for all ages, a Pinup Girl Contest and a beer pong tournament.

Chasco Fiesta 2013 has something for everyone

Main Street was still a stretch of dirt when the first Chasco Fiesta rolled out, offering the lure of the sparkling
Pithlachascotee River and a "Spanish Explorers verses Calusa Indians" fictional pageant to raise money for the community library.
That festival, held in early March of 1922 and featured in the New Port Richey Press,
was deemed a gala affair. Sidewalks were teeming and parking spaces scarce during
three days of celebration that featured a street parade of decked out Ford Model T's
and the like, the crowning of a Queen Chasco and Prince Pithla and a couple of
cabaret shows that raised $381 for the cause and featured a lineup of singing,
dancing and comedy. Only one casualty was reported, when a high wire act ended
unfortunately, resulting in two fractured ribs for the performer, Art Dacomo.
The Chasco Fiesta has grown in fits and starts since then, swelling from three days
to two weeks of fun while also drawing some controversy for such things as the depiction of American Indians, a bead tossing ban
and funding for the event during tough economic times. Held annually since 1947, Chasco has melded some of the
old with the new, keeping the popular street and boat parades and moving toward a more artful and realistic
celebration of American Indian culture with a traditional pow wow held in Sims Park.

Today's fest crowns a queen and king, giving a nod to two leading philanthropists at a black tie ball that benefits
Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired and Blind, while downtown New Port Richey offers the grittier thrill of
spinning carnival rides and a wafting mix of barbecue, fried dough, cotton candy and a whole lot of music.
Chasco Fiesta 2013 is a nine­day festival that kicks off next week with two major events. American Indian dancers
from throughout the country will celebrate a three­day pow wow that starts at 5 p.m. April 5, along with a night of
Christian contemporary music held at the Sims Park amphitheater and the opening of the midway on Bank Street.

Meanwhile, it will be formal attire for attendees of the 28th annual Chasco Coronation Ball. That gets under way at
6 p.m. April 5 at Spartan Manor in New Port Richey.
Some 80,000 spectators are expected to line the streets with the plea for "beads!" on April 6 as 140 floats and a
multitude of pirate krewes, school bands, local civic groups and organizations participate in the second largest
street parade in the Tampa Bay area. On April 13 boaters will show off their decorated rides with a float down the
Pithlachascotee River in what is touted as the state's oldest boat parade.
Sports enthusiasts are welcome to take in a charity round of golf, softball or bowling at various venues, or run the
Main Street Mile on April 6.

Music lovers will be treated to a rather eclectic blend featuring a daily genre at the Sims Park Amphitheater.
Think country, blue grass, blues, patriotic tunes, oldies, rock 'n' roll tributes and some youthful singers, too.
Of special note, and well worth coming out for: Southern Hospitality (Damon Fowler, JP Soars and Victor
Wainwright) playing selections from their latest CD release, Easy Living, on Blues Masters Night (April 11) with
New Port Richey singer/songwriter Julie Black. New to the venue is the crowd pleasing, can't help but get up and
dance, Black Honkeys belting out Motown covers on True Oldies Night (April 12). Concerts are free, except for the
Country Concert on April 13, featuring Randy Houser and the Henningsens. (Cost for tickets is $10­$20
