the virginia southpaws are a roots/rock band from, you guessed it, virginia. their self titled debut album is twelve tracks of non-stop, gritty rock with plenty of southern flavor baked into it. there are some serious lynyrd skynyrd vibes.


the influence of country music can be felt heavily in the subject matter and swagger of the songs, and the blues can be heard in the guitar playing, which frequently employs some nice slide licks. the rhythm section is pure rock'n'roll. there are a few folksier acoustic numbers as well, with touches of bluegrass instrumentation. these guys would sound very in-place as local openers for neo-southern rock champions, drive-by truckers. - The Modern Folk of AMerica

Swinging Blows in My Southpaws Stance

Rock/Blues Rock/Indie band Virginia Southpaws is coming on strong with a solid self-titled LP. The songs are catchy, the beats rocking, and listeners will have a good time listening to the music.

Their song “Chilled,” has a very retro vibe—like the British Rock/Pop from the 60’s and 70’s. It all starts with a catchy guitar riff and a good melody. The song’s breezy sound makes you want to just chill. The band slows things down a bit on the track “The Hound.” This song has more of a pure Country feel to it, with bluesy guitars and smoky/raspy vocals that go along with the instrumentation. The back-up vocals are spot on, and the Country Rock beat gets your foot tapping.

“Ode to Betty” brings on even more Blues, and one can imagine this song blasting out of the stereo of a classic car on the way to the diner on Route 66 back in the 50’s. The song is catchy, and has a nice retro vibe to it. The guitars and piano are really good on this song, and the vocals complement the music perfectly.A nice change of pace from the more up-tempo songs comes from “Things Fall Apart.” It’s a slow song, with a simple guitar intro to set things off. The lyrics are emotional, and the song is calming. The only one misstep is that the vocals sound slight in this particular song, and easily get lost through the guitars and the music.

The latest LP from the Virginia Southpaws is a solid Rock/Blues Rock album with many memorable songs. The throwback sound featured in many of its tracks is refreshing and is not heard often these days. The vocals and instrumentation are spot on. One thing the band needs to be careful of is singing too softly on the slower songs—the lyrics can easily be drowned out by the music.
