THEKOIWAY is a collective that has been steadily building a sound and vision representing an eclectic celebration of art in all its forms, as evidenced by their tracks released since 2019 on streaming services.

The project was created in New York by guitarist, producer, and artistic director Víctor Vildósola (formerly of La Pozze Latina). Together with Matt Lambert (drums and percussion), Eric “Dani” Maluenda (electric bass), and Pedro Villagra (winds, saxophone, guitar), they form the core structure of the group.

"I’m very excited to return to Chile and share this project with my people. It encapsulates a long journey as a musician and producer. Through it, I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with different musicians and singers from various places, which has helped me grow and develop as an artist," Vildósola emphasizes.

On May 5th at Matucana 100, the group will perform live for the first time in Chile. They will debut a new studio album during this event, featuring tracks that include collaborations with Raúl Zurita, Héctor Noguera (national and international arts award recipient), and Juan “Sativo” Salazar (formerly of Tiro de Gracia). The latter is featured on “El Juego de la Vida”, a song set to premiere on digital platforms the same day as the concert.

"Juan and I were classmates at the Art School, and we later crossed paths on several occasions—me as the guitarist for La Pozze Latina and him as the leader of Tiro de Gracia. This collaboration stems from a longstanding desire to work with him. I’ve always considered him one of the icons of Hip-Hop in Chile and undoubtedly one of the best MCs and lyricists in the country," says Víctor.

The evening will open with a warm-up by DJ Haití, followed by the multicultural sound of American artist Trevor Bystron and the quartet Gold Star For Everyone. The event will also feature interludes by Pato Pimienta, who will serve as the host for the musical evening.

THEKOIWAY, whose name is inspired by the mythology of the koi fish, will take center stage with a performance featuring visual projections, theatrical elements, and a performance by South African-American dancer and choreographer Tumi Vil Nkomo. The presentation aims to amplify the group’s distinctive musical energy, which leans towards World Music while incorporating traditional North and South American folk elements with styles like Funk, Pop, Rock, R&B, and Soul.

A lo largo de su carrera, Víctor a.k.a KØI, ha investigado diferentes ritmos y tendencias artísticas/musicales en diversas coordenadas y ha sido miembro de diferentes agrupaciones chilenas– como La Pozze Latina– y extranjeras de relevancia. Consecuencia de todo este camino decide crear esta propuesta que el mismo describe como “un proyecto sonoro-artístico, exploratorio y de vida” que estrena de la mano de su primer sencillo, Libertad; en colaboración con la galardonada chilena Evelyn Cornejo y el cantante y MC Ecuatoriano, Mateo Alan.

“Desde hace un año estoy trabajando con materiales históricos, política contingente y además desarrollando ideas-concepto y tareas claras, para integrar equipos de trabajo de diferentes áreas y hacer otro tipo de cosas como lyric videos”, agrega.

Precisamente en este último formato acaba de lanzar el primer single de El camino de Koi, un himno que busca reforzar el derecho a la vida, a recobrar su integridad y libertad como persona, un llamado a la no discriminación, a la igualdad, a la libertad de expresión, de conciencia y de pensamiento; una invitación profunda a conectarse con el origen, desde el respeto y solidaridad.

“En este proyecto es donde más he tenido tiempo para buscar lo que quiero, meditarlo y, sí es preciso, esperar para conseguir lo que pretendo que se plasme. En cuanto a ritmos es el más ecléctico. Para este track tuve referencias como Silvio Rodríguez y Manu Chao, para el resto del disco es algo que estamos en proceso de trabajo aún, puede ser desde Jackson Pollok hasta el Che Guevara, no tenemos límite (…) Quiero que la gente se sienta reflejada en mi trabajo, lo disfruten, lo hagan propio y, si además se vuelve un himno para los sin voz, ¡genial!”, concluye.

SOBRE EL ARTISTA


Víctor comienza a temprana edad su carrera profesional como guitarrista de la agrupación La Pozze Latina. Desde el año 2000 trabaja en paralelo como productor musical de varios proyectos, entre ellos el remake del clásico de Los Prisioneros, Corazones rojos, parte del exitoso álbum Tributo Los Prisioneros editado en 2001, mismo año en donde la banda se separa para luego retornar a los escenarios con una nueva formación en 2005 en la que pasa al frente como uno de los vocalistas, compositor y productor del material de La Nueva Pozze Latina.

Junto a este cuerpo de trabajo más su coproducción en el proyecto Fondart del año 2002 Joyas del Barrio, afianza su camino como productor musical y comienza a forjar su etiqueta de multi-instrumentista.

Es así que en 2007 forma una nueva agrupación llamada Tranki donde además de producir sus temas e interpretar guitarras explora hacia el área electrónica y hip hop. Este último paso le hizo querer explorar mucho más sobre esa escena teniendo el proyecto paralelo con el baterista Abraham Yussef Preachers in Armani que, en su corta existencia, tuvo muy buena recepción del público.

En busca de perfeccionamiento, Víctor se traslada a México, trabajando en nuevos programas para la producción y tendencias musicales Ableton live y Pro Tools. Allí forma parte de las bandas de Mariel Mariel, La NIña Dioz, Tomasa del Real y hace remixes tan importantes como para Torreblanca.

Cuando termina los estudios recibe la invitación a formar parte de un colectivo artístico en NY, USA; es ahí que decide mudarse y comenzar a construir su segundo estudio de grabación, su colaboración y producción en bandas como Rebel Díaz, además de hacer clases de música en el Museo del Bronx para niños. Además desarrolla su trabajo musical con el neoyorquino Dirty Delorean, teniendo giras en Grecia y Sud América. Actualmente trabaja en su proyecto solista THEKOIWAY. - CHILEFUNK

Para este 5 de junio, Día Mundial del Medioambiente, reservó THEKOIWAY el lanzamiento de su primer sencillo, “Libertad”. Victor Vildósola is the driving force behind the band THEKOIWAY. When he solos on his electric guitar, it’s as if you’re hearing the son of Carlos Santana. Born in Chile, Vildósola’s roots stretch even further south. It’s only a small step from The Game of Love to The Game of Life, which is also the title of THEKOIWAY’s new single—originally released in 2022 as El Juego de la Vida.

In the accompanying video, directed by Vildósola himself, he collaborates with 87-year-old actor Héctor Noguera, whose 2014 film Mr. Kaplan was even submitted for an Oscar. Not only does the title bear a strong resemblance to Santana’s hit, but musically, The Game of Life also stays close to that style. The choice of singer Vanesa Valdez is excellent, as is the inclusion of the Dima Faustov Horn Ensemble from Ukraine. Soulful, funky, and full of Latin influences.

Victor Vildósola is de drijvende kracht achter de band THEKOIWAY. Als hij soleert op zijn elektrische gitaar is het alsof je de zoon van Carlos Santana hoort. Geboren in Chili, zijn de roots van Vildosala zelfs nog een stuk zuidelijker. Het is een kleine stap van ‘The Game of Love’ naar ‘The Game of Life’ en dat is dan ook de nieuwe single van THEKOIWAY. Oorspronkelijk al in 2022 uitgebracht als ‘El Juego de la Vida’.

In de begeleidende video die door Vildósola is geregisseerd werkt hij onder meer samen met de 87-jarige acteur Héctor Noguera waarvan de film “Mr. Kaplan” uit 2014 nog is ingestuurd voor een Oscar. Niet alleen de titel verschilt maar weinig van Santana’s hit, ook muzikaal blijft ‘The Game of Life’ er dicht bij in de buurt.
