"Wheels of steel: Colorado musicians get together for a different kind of hip-hop benefit - May 09, 2012"

It's barely afternoon on a blindingly sunny Earth Day out in Denver's Five Points neighborhood, and Kalyn Heffernan has already been busted.

Fortunately, we're not dealing with the police — although her wheelchair, as she'll later explain in our interview, has kept her out of jail on more than one occasion. Instead, a handful of environmental do-gooders are telling us about how they spent the morning cleaning up graffiti.

"Probably my stuff," says the inveterate tagger with a wily grin, prompting the volunteers to assure us they've got nothing against graffiti, just so long as it's in its proper place.

I'm still pondering where that proper place might be as we pile into Heffernan's van and I notice the near-empty spray paint cans on the passenger floorboard.

With the Wheelchair Sports Camp frontwoman at the wheel, and the two emcees from fellow Denver hip-hop group Wandering Monks in the back, we drive to Heffernan's house to talk about their music and the show they'll be playing Saturday, May 12, to benefit the family of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed teen whose fatal shooting in Florida has drawn attention to the state's controversial "Stand Your Ground" law.

Heffernan's band, which will be headlining the Black Sheep benefit on a bill with the Wandering Monks and numerous local emcees, has been getting a lot of attention since the 24-year-old University of Colorado at Denver graduate landed on the cover of New York's influential Village Voice this past December. The 4,000-word story, titled "Wheelchair Sports Camp's Crip Life," covered a lot of ground, from the brittle bone disease that the 53-pound, 3½-foot-tall bandleader was born with, to a meeting at Eminem's Shady Records with A&R director Rigo "Riggs" Morales, who's interested in producing the group.

If you want to understand why, just check the video for "Where We All Live," the title track of the brilliant new Wheelchair Sports Camp EP, with its endearingly beautiful vocal from bandmate Abi Miller leading up to a typically engaging rap from Heffernan:

Never really been the type to color in the lines

But confess I've been blessed and obsessed with sunshine

The city is my canvas so I gotta bump dat

And just keep swimming with a floaty and a blunt wrap

Not quite tall enough for the big rides

Haven't grown an inch since I was 6 and I'm just fine

It's showtime and I won't anticipate perfect

But be damned if I didn't make every mistake worth it

If Heffernan and her band infuse their sound with traces of soul and jazz (Miller plays saxophone, for chrissake), Wandering Monks' McAD and Linguistory, in tandem with their live deejay, serve up lilting three-part harmonies that wouldn't sound out of place on a classic reggae album.

Influenced by groups like the Wailers and Dead Prez, the two Denver-area musicians — Linguistory grew up in Colorado Springs, McAD in Milwaukee — have a gift for devising rapid-fire rhymes that are socially conscious but never mundane. As they put it on last year's self-titled debut album:

No one wants to be a damn robot

Monday morning traffic, TV and Zoloft

My time is all I have

Caught myself wishing that away

Couldn't wait to get to Saturday

Watching my days pass me by

No more wasting my time

Back in the living room of the house Heffernan shares with her girlfriend and a pair of amusingly inquisitive hounds, the three musicians gather around a coffee table to talk shop.

Indy: When it comes to underground hip-hop, people tend to think of cities like Minneapolis, which has built up a really strong scene with collectives like Rhymesayers and Doomtree. How far would Colorado have to go to put itself on the map nationally?

McAD: I think that first it'd have to be shocked to life, start breathing, and become part of this planet. [Laughter.] It's just really far behind, you know, especially when it comes to supporting the artists and knowing what a sustainable industry looks like. Minneapolis — not just with music, but with the arts in general — they're like second to New York in funding and things like that.

Linguistory: Seattle's more like that, too, and neither one of those metropolitan areas are that much bigger than the Denver metro area.

Kalyn: Yeah, I almost feel like the capability is here. Denver is diverse, but it still feels very segregated. We don't have a defining style. Whereas in the Minneapolis scene, even though they were all doing their own things, it was all the same essence. It's like Brother Ali, [Atmosphere producer] Ant, and all those guys, they were all working together. Whereas Colorado just doesn't have that. The people who've become famous out of Colorado are so all over the place. It's like, Pretty Lights, Big Head Todd, 3OH!3, the Flobots...

McAD: Leftover Salmon, the Samples...

Linguistory: String Cheese Incident, jam bands.

Kalyn: Yeah, nothing sounds alike...

Indy: Let's not forget the Fray.

McAd: [Laughs.] Yeah - Colorado Springs Independent

"Reverb - December 22, 2011"

Funniest lyric of the past week? My money's on: "When I'm dried up, with nothing to say / I can make some pussy-ass music, just like the Fray."

Those lines, or something very much like them — they rap fast, I type slow — were delivered by Wandering Monks, a Denver trio who drove down Sunday to join the CD release celebration for Che Bong's Sleeping While You're Awake at the Black Sheep.

The show also featured some pretty impressive sets from Che Bong's Sound Powered Engine labelmates, including Milogic, Made Up Minds and Bullhead*ded — whose infectious "Breakdown" deserves to be a hit when their own album is released early next year. (You can read last week's cover story on Che Bong at bit.ly/u2LKHv.)

As for the Wandering Monks, I don't think I've ever seen a live hip-hop act with lilting three-part harmonies before, let alone one whose sharply written, politically conscious material would make a great soundtrack for the Occupy movement. The group's self-titled debut album came out just a few weeks ago, so expect to hear more about them in 2012. - Colorado Springs Independent

"Reverb - November 14, 2012"

Whether or not they actually recognize the name, most Colorado Springs music fans are already familiar with the extraordinary work of Pueblo's LastLeaf Custom Print & Design. Mathias Valdez's handmade prints and posters for the Haunted Windchimes, the Charlie Milo Trio and the MeadowGrass Music Festival have hugely enhanced the aesthetics of our local music community. And now that community is giving back with two "Rock for Sophie" benefits to help defray the cost of weekly treatments for Mathias' 3-year-old daughter, who was diagnosed last month with childhood leukemia.

A Saturday, Nov. 24 benefit at Phil's Radiator in Pueblo will feature Awaken the Prophets, Oatie Paste, Force the Trigger, Scrotus, American Mourning, the Beast of Milwaukee and Bridges. It's an all-ages show that kicks off at 5 for a mere six bucks.

Then at the Black Sheep on Friday, Nov. 30, you can catch a second all-ages benefit featuring Inelements, Malakai, Bridges, Cull the Herd and Vital Malice. Showtime is 8:15 with a $7 cover.

This would also be a fine time to visit the shop's website at lastleafprinting.com, where you can peruse and purchase everything from national tour posters commissioned by Grace Potter to limited-edition five-color art prints of the Cramps' Lux Interior from the Dead Rockstars gallery show in Seattle. (Dave Mansfield, are you listening?)

As for the coming week, the Hopeful Heroines' Xanthe Alexis and the Windchimes' Chela Lujan will be doing a special show in the intimate confines of Shuga's next Monday. Xanthe says she'll be performing all the songs from a solo concept album she's working on about a couple during World War II. Chela will also be debuting new material during her set, and both will be joined by Heroines violinist Harriett Landrum at evening's end.

Moving into the realm of hip-hop, the ReMINDers have returned home from their 27-date tour with Brother Ali, which included two sold-out nights at First Avenue, the Minneapolis venue where Prince and The Time famously battled it out in Purple Rain.

But while the conscious rap duo are currently Colorado Springs' most widely known hip-hop ambassadors, there's good reason to remember another group that was the first to bring local hip-hop to the world at large.

The Procussions — who went from local hole-in-the-wall gigs to a Sony record deal and a national tour with A Tribe Called Quest — announced last week that they've surpassed the $10,000 mark in their Indiegogo fundraising campaign. That means they'll be recording a new album, their first in seven years, which is slated for release in March.

While the Procussions' Jason "Mr. J." Medeiros and Stro Elliot have worked on each other's solo projects in their adopted L.A., it took a few homecoming reunion shows in the wake of the Waldo Canyon Fire to fully rekindle their musical bond. The fundraising campaign continues for another four weeks, with donor incentives ranging from Procussions CDs and hoodies to exclusive beats from Stro that you can use for your very own hip-hop opus.

Meanwhile, another Colorado-rooted duo that's readying a new album for early 2013 release will be performing this Friday with Che Bong at the Ancient Mariner. Denver's musically and politically astute Wandering Monks will be making their first Colorado Springs appearance since the Trayvon Martin hip-hop benefit last May at the Black Sheep.

The show will feature material from Jubilee — a recent EP of thematically linked songs promoting the concept of local currency — plus unreleased tunes from the group's next full-length offering. And yes, promises emcee, lyricist and Springs ex-pat Scott "Linguistory" Eschenberg, the album will include "Courage," a song that contains one of my favorite and most oft-cited lyrics of all time: "When I'm dried up with nothing left to say / I could write some pussy-ass music like the Fray."

Indie Hip Hop at RfL: Indie Music Blast 434 ft Trew Music and Wandering Monks
Published April 16, 2012 | By Eban

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

I hope you had a great weekend, now it is time to get back into the music.

Today’s show is NSFW. Not even close.

The focus on today’s Reaching for Lucidity Indie Music Blast Podcast episode 434 is the indie Hip Hop and Rap scene. The tunes on today’s show will set you up for the week ahead. Yes, they are that good.

The question may come up why we have not done a show featuring the hip hop and rap genre before? The answer is, “I don’t know.” But we have now and this will become part of the rotating Monday lineup here on out.

Artists featured on the show today include two acts represented by Ariel CyperPR. We are getting a lot of acts out of that operation these days. First up is Trew Music and then Wandering Monks.

Starting the show we have The GataNegrra. Closing the show we have Buck Fifthy feat. 9 Mill.

That folks is a great show!

We have celebrity birthdays. We talk a bit about the doom that is tax day. We look back on this day in history.

We have Reaching for Lucidity Productions news! We have another show starting based around the fight game. It will feature news and previews of both the MMA and Boxing world. This week will see another, very experimental, Riff-Cast going out. All that, plus we have new supporters here at RfL. Check out Boxingdepot.com and MMAopinion.com. Thanks for the support Aaron!

"New Joint: "Hard Times" - Wandering Monks"

Peep this new joint entitled "Hard Times" from the hip hop duo Wandering Monks based out of Aurora, Colorado. This beat is sick on some kind of funky shit. The lyrics are deeply thought out and are laced with knowledge and positive messages.

Here is some background on these guys:

Originating in the socially sterile environment of the front range of Colorado, Wandering Monks is a musical entity consisting of rapper/producer McAD and his emcee partner Linguistory. The duo - who came together in 2009 - has worked tirelessly to create a unique brand of conscious underground hip hop that blends multiple genres yet maintains a distinct sound.

Drawing inspiration from a long tradition of protest music, including Bob Marley, Public Enemy, Rage Against The Machine, Dead Prez, System Of A Down and Immortal Technique - the Wandering Monks may not be the most commercially viable group but in the day and age of internet and expanding sub-genres that matters not. “The mainstream is a minor distraction but it doesn't prevent us from doing what we want to do,” says Linguistory. “Hip hop is infinite!” - R. Ticulate at The Future of Rap Music

BSOTS 119 - BGB: As Far As It Depends On You...
Now Playing: Various Artists - Midnight Snacks
Topic: my podcasts

I'm sure that there are many who can look back at 2011 with fond memories and thankful memories. I am not one of those people. I am chomping at the bit for this year to be over.

It bothers me that I am 38 years old and can still find a myriad of things to scream "Screw This" about. The restlessness in my being feels like a guy in a straitjacket kicking at his four padded walls nonstop. I don't know much about a lot, but I know enough to believe that it can't be good to constantly be angry. Maybe that's why I haven't done more than one "buckwild" show prior to this one. At any rate, I need the release and perhaps you do, too.

There's a 25-minute mix that's dedicated to the out of work, the overworked, the "working poor," and anyone who's ever been harrassed by the cops about anything. There's Afrobeat, Swedish jazz fusion, global soul, angry hip-hop, even a little Fishbone in the mix. Should you need to let off a primal scream before 2011 comes to a close, let this show provide the soundtrack to your moment of much-needed catharsis. Happy New Year. All the best to you in 2012.

"Wandering Monks New “Jubilee” Album coming soon"

“The new Wandering Monks album “Jubilee”, is off to the presses and expected to be available by October of 2012. Bringing the concept of “Local Organic Currency” to the masses, teaming up withmtnHoursand its creator Wayne Walton, the Wandering Monks intend to transform the way every individual understands money. The message is simple, remove the parasite, remove the problem. Abolish Usury and the ponzi scam that is backing today’s Federal Reserve system, and replace it with a system that promotes abundance, and gives the Power back to the People.

Jubilee is a musical journey that both address’ the largest problems working against the well-being, and successful future of the average working citizen, and offers a clear tangible solution for people to immediately begin taking back the control over their own lives, and truly returning to a way of living that is both sustainable, as well as fruitful. Jubilee is the Wandering Monks 2nd album, although it is considered and EP for its relatively short track list.

The album follows the Wandering Monks self titled “debut” album which was a huge success among the Colorado Hip Hop community, as well as amongst the “truth” movement across the nation, both of which have been growing in presence over the last 10 years. To purchase the Monks “debut” album, follow thebuy nowlink to complete your order and support the Revolution by spreading the message, and the music that many more need to hear.” - Before It's News

"Steal This Track: Karma, Varlet, Wandering Monks and Yonnas"

As we all begin our abdominal stretches in preparation for the annual patriotic binge, it’s also time to create those Thanksgiving playlists that will drive our families crazy. Steal This Track is here to help with fresh, new Colorado music from rugged MC Karma (of BLKHRTS), indie Americana rockers Varlet, conscious hip-hoppers Wandering Monks and a whole new sound from Yonnas Abraham, also of BLKHRTS and the Pirate Signal. Better get right to it.

Colorado hip-hop is known for being dominated by socially conscious, politically active artists, and Wandering Monks are the latest in that lineage. McAD (known to his mom as Aaron Dukes) is best known for his work with Boulder-based hip-hop crew the Freedom Movement, but back in 2009, he teamed up with young, like-minded Colorado rapper Linguístory (whose birth certificate reads Scott Eschenberg) to create Wandering Monks. On their self-titled debut album, the pair tackle police brutality, economic injustice and GMOs while also telling personal stories of love, friendship and world travel with honesty, energy and crisp flow. Rhythmic influences from all over the world color McAD’s production and make the album a diverse listen that will grab the ear of fans of hip-hop, funk, reggae, dancehall, soul, cumbia and more. Wandering Monks will release the album on Black Friday with a show at the Fox Theatre in Boulder (including performances from the Reminders, Mike Wird and many others). Scroll down to steal “Toxic Pollutants” and start getting excited for the show. - Denver Post

Bio

Wandering Monks Music is unlike most hip hop you'll hear, old or new. Their sound is a distinct, yet cohesive amalgam blending revolutionary ideology with soul-shakin' bass and funky beats. Their lyrics, always deliberate never convenient, inform and challenge without resorting to soap-boxing. Captivating choruses weave gems of insight and truth through layers of dance-happy production, while sweet harmonies sing sincere messages that convey anything BUT the hedonistic indifference found in most popular club music. The group depicts a wide array of well-researched social issues in their rhymes, but more importantly, their music portrays positive messages of gratitude and self-empowerment. The Wandering Monks Live Band is a gift appealing to audiences across a widely varying array of demographic spectrum -- age, gender, cultural, and even habitual hip hop listeners vs. non-hip hop fans alike.

Joining Forces in 2009, Wandering Monks was born from a handful of collaborations between MCAD and Lingustory, and they have spent the last three years refining their dynamics together in the studio and onstage. MCAD has been part of the Colorado music scene for over a decade. He began his musical journey playing guitar in rock bands as a teenager and DJing as a young adult. Heavily influenced by his introduction to spoken word poet Saul Williams, MCAD made a drastic change in direction which led to his rap beginnings. MCAD found spoken word and rap to be more effective than direct dialogue to initiate conversations with his community about taboo, yet relevant topics such as Native American affairs. Empowered by his newfound platform for transformative communication, he founded the Freedom Movement and quickly diversified his skills in production, singing, and public speaking. With the Freedom Movement, MCAD has worked with several partner musicians, released two official albums, toured the West coast, performed in New York and played all across Colorado. Over the course of his musical career, MCAD has become somewhat of a hip hop renaissance man, with a thorough understanding of the creative, technical, and business aspects of the music industry.

Lingustory came across The Freedom Movement by chance via an online musician ad and identified immediately with MCAD's political philosophy and authenticity. Just as Lingustorys solo endeavors began taking shape, he started attending Freedom Movement shows locally. Soon the friendship that emerged between the two emcees led to collaboration. With a heart full of Brazilian music and a head ripe with underground hip hop lyrics, Lingustory brought his calculated writing style to the Freedom Movement mix; before long he dropped out of journalism school to focus on being a Lyrical Journalist. As his stage name implies, Lingustorys style yields a notably linguistic quality, substantiated by his flawless execution of complex tongue twisters and his detailed narratives delivered smoothly within the metrics of each song. The Monks have achieved a mutually supportive approach to their live performances in which they consistently back each other up: Lingustory harmonizes to add fullness to the melodies and MCAD fills in on Lingustorys overlapping lyrics. The balanced fusion of MCADs colorful, guitar-driven production and his soulful delivery together with Lingustorys well-crafted, multisyllabic rhymes is what defines Wandering Monks music.

The Self-Titled Debut Album from Wandering Monks was released in November of 2011 at the Fox Theater in Boulder, Colorado. The album examines a number of issues from globalization and genetically modified foods to subject matter of a more intimate nature, such as relationships and personal growth. By the time their debut came out, the Monks were halfway through writing their second full length album. In April of 2012, the duo halted their progress on their second LP and began writing for a commissioned concept album entitled Jubilee. In less than three months they had finished creating the thematic Jubilee EP - a musical exploration of monetary freedom endorsing the concept of local currency. Jubilee shows significant growth in the duos cohesive co-creation. The group gracefully incorporates more complex song structures, intertwines the emcees vocal styles more frequently, and demonstrates their ability to turn an elaborate question into a consistent, digestible statement. The Monks released Jubilee in September of 2012 and quickly followed that up with their sophomore LP release, Shining Through, which includes such crowd favorites as Moon Goddess, 99, Courage, Hard Times, and Love Yourself.
