In case anyone had any doubts, hip-hop is alive and well in Chicago. On February 22, rising star BIZ will lead a showcase of local hip-hop talent right here at the Metro. The Iranian American rapper BIZ has become a prominent artist in the Chicago underground rap scene. Much like fellow Midwestern hip-hop duo Atmosphere, BIZ’s music is a lyrical tour-de-force as it deals with the highs and lows of life set to immaculate instrumentation.

BIZ is joined by local Chicago rappers Probcause, the Palmer Squares, and Schafe. Coming off the heels of his latest release, Probcause is in his own words “constantly developing” his sound. In addition to being a talented visual artist Probcause is a true blue Chicagoan. The rapper has oft compared himself and his music to the scrappiness of Bulls Center Joakim Noah. Probcause brings something new to the hip-hop game, an evolved sound that’s still familiar to listeners, along with his unique “scrappy” upbeat lyrical content. Hip-hop duo Palmer Squares take a gung-ho youthful approach to their music, but under the guise of the catchy hooks and beats the duo reveal themselves to be profound lyrical wordsmiths. Rounding out the bill is Schafe who is making waves with his brand of psychedelic hip-hop. Schafe’s sultry delivery set to ethereal backbeats is not unlike that of Kid Cudi as it moves and grooves in all the right places.

There’s something about work from an upcoming artist that sucks me in. Maybe it’s the realness behind their music or maybe it’s the inspiration from their hard work that rubs off on me. Whatever it is, Chicago’s very own BIZ grabbed my attention with these qualities in his track “Sit Low” featuring Chi-town native Trilogy. This catchy track and hook provides a dope visual that was directed and shot by non other than Trilogy and his production team over at Trilavision Video.
