Close your eyes when you press play on this one, and tell me it doesn’t feel like the band is in the room with you. Wake Child – a Boston-based, Berklee College of Music bred trio – are pushing Psych/R&B in a big way, and the only thing more natural than their sound is their chemistry, as we experience here on their debut single, “In the End”.
There’s no substitute for raw musicianship, and yet, musicianship is no substitute for good songwriting. Fortunately, the members of Wake Child – Danny Silberstein, Terrell Hines, and Austin Max – excel in both areas. “In the End” is a gentle trip travelled boldly, from the first intoxicatingly groovy guitar riff, to the impossible shuffles, and all the way through a smooth array of smoky vocals.
Despite a whiff of Snarky Puppy’s jazziness here, and a note of Tame Impala’s psychedelic texturing there, the sum of Wake Child’s influence is unmistakably their own concoction. It’s like hearing the skill of a band only musicians listen to crash into the infectious appeal of a band everyone listens to.
Wake Child’s debut album is coming; we just don’t know when. What we do know is that it’s a dot on the horizon worth anticipating with a healthy dose of excitement, as the trio’s first impression has proven to be quite an impression indeed. - Jonathan Vilardi
3-person alternative rock outfit Wake Child has released their first single, “In The End,” in advance of the release of their first full-length project.
Danny Silberstein, singer-songwriter and guitarist, Austin Max, lead guitarist, and Terrell Hines, drummer – all of whom study at Berklee – together make up Wake Child, an exciting new act (one which was formed at the end of 2015 but is just now beginning to officially release original material).
Per their website, the trio has combined their respective backgrounds and musical influences, as natives of California, Georgia, and Tennessee – with wide-ranging tastes combining blues and funk textures, hip-hop, R&B and soul influences, and indie-alternative sounds – to create an awesome confluence of musical goodness. - Secret Shores
Boston trio Wake Child puts a showcase on throughout new track “In the End”. Flowing with structural variety, the trickling suaveness of the first vocal-laden verses gives way into a halted bridge and more muscle-y take on the verse in the primary hook, with a bluesy organ kicking in around 01:50, followed by a sparse guitar-only bridge. It’s a sound that reminds of !!! (Chk Chk Chk)’s developmental rock tendencies, with pulsating slabs of guitars being persistent over moments of both halted beauty and ceaseless energy. Additionally, with a vocal croon that reminds tonally of a more rock-oriented Jeff Buckley, there’s very little not to enjoy here. “In the End” punches from the get-go and never stops. - Mike Mineo
Hey, tell us a bit about the band.
We’re three individual artists that came together to make music we could only create together. We all met at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA and began writing around 2 years ago. Wake Child is made up of Terrell Hines (drums/vox), Danny Silberstein (Guitar/vox), and Austin Max (Guitar, Vox).
Where did the new single come from?
Danny: “In the End” was the first song we ever got to work on together. We were all friends and when Austin had a project for a performance class he brought us together to work on it. From the second we played the first note I think we all knew we were on to something. We recorded and produced it in our friends kitchen and we’re so stoked to have it out.
Is there more content in the pipeline?
We absolutely have more content coming. We’ve spent the past 2 years writing and recording a ton of music. We’ll be releasing singles over the next year or so and can’t wait to show people what we’ve been working on.
What’s on the horizon for you guys?
We’re all graduating in around 2 weeks (so scary) and will continue writing and playing together after graduating. We’ll be back and forth between Los Angeles and Nashville. - Lex Low
I have recently watched a demo video of Wake Child, right before they dropped their very first single In the End. Let me explain something to you: these guys will have many more singles, EPs, and albums to come. This song brings something that you can’t help yourself from getting up from whatever your doing and start dancing… don’t believe me? If you did, I know you at least started bopping your head. This is a recent band we have been building a friendship with. They are a trio based out of Boston. I don’t know how they did it, well actually in their Bio statement they explain just how they formed, which relates to how this unorthodox style of a song was created. The trap style instrumentals tangled creatively into the voice of a soul artist makes for a great listen for when you want to hear something refreshing. Wake Child began with a couple of friends playing music. Danny Silberstein and Terrell Hines were helping Austin Max rehearse for a class performance he had the following day. All three attend the prestigious Berklee College of Music.
Danny, a singer-songwriter in the Laurel Canyon mold, had just released a solo EP titled Static Noise and Other Miscellaneous Sounds. He wanted to collaborate with Austin Max, a Tennessee native. Austin is the rare guitar virtuoso who plays off-the-cuff, never totally content with a written or unwritten riff. They had invited Terrell Hines to help them practice for Austin’s class performance the next day. Terrell is a former gospel drummer with a core of technical knowledge that expands as he plays, into the realm of his stylistic influences: psychedelic jazz and modern trap.
Austin and Danny started to play their song’s intro, lightly strumming their guitars. When it came time for Terrell to jump in, he played a sixteenth-triplet trap rhythm, providing a propulsive backbeat and transforming the song. Austin kept playing, but Danny couldn’t keep up, laughing in amazement and putting down his guitar. He was blown away by the feeling and the sound of the band dynamic he could already vividly envision.
It took a few months to convince the others, but Danny knew right away. This was a band and this band would be named Wake Child. As a trio, Wake Child synthesizes the hometowns of California, Georgia and Tennessee into a melting pot of Psych/R&B brilliance. Bluesy guitars and effortless harmonies keep Wake Child easy on the ears. It will be obvious once you hear their debut album--they were meant to play together.
