Initially crossing paths in middle school choir, guitarist Carlos “Paco” Brown met drummer Christopher Rauch. Along with a mutual friend they formed a band. While people came and went through the years, the duo always stuck together practicing their craft and eventually evolved into their band We’re from Antarctica. After a failed attempt at recording their first EP left them without a guitarist and bassist the team was left in limbo.
However things worked out when their closest friend Mackenzie Kressley returned from military duty and took over bass. During a trip to Pittsburgh, the group meet Johnathan Blanco who took over for guitarist. However while recording their EP Porch Light at Kings Studio, the band felt something was still lacking in their sound. Luckily while attending college, Brown and Kressley found the last missing piece in keyboardist Jessie Rae. Now united, We’re from Antarctica is determined to leave a mark on people’s conscience and heart.
The People We New begins with the instrumental “Colourblind.” The instrumentation is wonderful giving everyone a chance to showcase his or her talent. It’s an upbeat track with some light conversation thrown in the background as the song fades out. “Boulder” has beautiful female vocals that simply melt your heart. The concept of heartbreak is prevalent as mixed signals can make a relationship complicated. Showing much range in the chorus “You know how to help me when I’m all alone. If you want me I’ll be right over. One look and you have me, I’m sold. I’ll pack up my things and go.”
On the following track “Little Thorn (Bratpack)” We’re from Antarctica provides a little more edge. It’s a much more traditional rock track with a hint of blues. Brown’s voice is rugged that intensifies along with the instruments. ”Nico” comes crashing in behind Rauch’s booming drums. Both “Nico” and “Empty Shorelines” are both upbeat tempo jams that rejuvenate listeners along with some stylized guitar solo. The band changes up their style yet again on the groovy tune “Manic.” While the previous songs were more rock focus, “Manic” is much more fun in that it lets you dance to and let loose. “Love Space” is a soft love track that keeps the greatest from the band coming with its solid instrumentation.
The People We Knew is a fantastic album from We’re from Antarctica. It’s a collection of stories about the different people and characters the bands come across while being relatable. Most of the songs fall within the emotional spectrum of miscommunication, escapism, and figuring out love. The lyrics are deep yet enjoyable enough that anyone can relate to them. The album shows that life is ever changing. The vocals are a joy to listen to and the band does a good job providing a fresh take on rock. Fans of the genre should definitely give The People We Knew a listen.

We're From Antarctica is a band based out of the Lehigh Valley, created by guitarist/vocalist Carlos "Paco" Brown and drummer Christopher Rauch. They initially crossed paths in middle school choir, and after a while they put a band together with a mutual friend. Through the years, band members came and went but Paco and Chris stuck together, the tenacious pair always practicing and progressing forward. The band took many names, but eventually become "We're From Antarctica." A failed attempt at recording their first EP would leave them without a guitarist and bassist, placing them in limbo once again.
But things worked out when their close friend, MacKenzie Kressley, returned from the military and was just as hungry to create. Mack took the role of bassist, but they still needed a lead guitarist. On a trip to Pittsburgh, through mutual acquaintances, Chris was pointed in Jonathan Blanco's direction. A tryout was put in place and almost instantly, the shoes were filled. They began work on their EP "Porch Light," recorded at Kings Studio. They tracked compositions that they had for a while, but with the new additions, those songs took on a new life. After months of playing gigs and creating new connections, they began work on their full length album. Though the album was showing promise, they felt like they were lacking something. The idea of adding a keyboardist was mentioned and the stars aligned when Paco and Mack met Jessie Rae on their first day of college. After some conversation they invited to her to a show and to a practice. The final puzzle piece was found and We're From Antarctica was complete.
Our goal is to leave a mark in people’s conscience and heart; to be a reminder that they aren’t alone in their journey through the uncertainty of life.
