SONG ON THE TIMES

SONG ON THE TIMES is an illustrated songbook and album that brings together music from working class movements for peoples’ rights in the US and UK over 400 years, and sings them for today’s struggles. Enjoy Windborne’s richly harmonized arrangements, a book of beautifully illustrated lyrics and music, alongside historical context from activists, singers, and scholars. Windborne sprang to wider recognition two years ago, after singing a 19th century protest song outside Trump Tower which went viral, gaining over a million views between Youtube and Facebook.

Lay Around That Shack
Featuring gourd banjos, mining songs and haunting harmonies, Lay Around That Shack winds a path through American music, with side trips across the sea to its English roots. A departure from their typical repertoire of polyphonic singing traditions from around the world, Windborne’s signature four-part harmony breathes new life into old songs in their first studio album. The work was conceived of while performing on their US State Dept. American Music Abroad Musical Diplomacy tour of Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Angola, and was released in the fall of 2015.
Midwinter Meeting
In their first quartet album, Windborne puts on a vocal tour de force spanning seven countries and as many languages. Recorded live in 2013, their vocal agility, attention to detail, and years of study with singing masters from traditional cultures around the world shines through.
With Wand'ring Feet
This trio album from 2011 features traditional and original vocal trio music from Corsica, the Republic of Georgia, and North America.
Windborne
Lynn and Will Rowan recorded their first CD, Windborne as a duo in 2008 with Lauren as a guest singer.
“This is a strong debut from these richly talented newcomers. The purity of their voices, strength of their material, and attention to detail in their arrangements, combine to create an unusual, but very inspiring recording.” Mary DesRosiers, Folk Musicologist

"A quartet the likes of which I haven't seen since... Coope, Boyes and Simpson, the Watersons, or The Voice Squad. Just absolutely phenomenal! -BBC Traveling Folk

“The best musical discovery of the year...Stunningly powerful vocal harmony...Windborne sets a new bar for folk harmony singing today” Brian O'Donovan, NPR

Stunningly powerful vocal harmony floods the room as the four Windborne singers present Song on the Times, their project of working class movements for peoples' rights from the past 400 years, sung for today struggles. The group was catapulted to new heights when clip of them singing in protest outside Trump tower went viral, and their Indiegogo for the project raised 1,600% of its goal from 2,600 people in every State and 22 countries. Aside from this new project, and their deep roots in New England folk culture, Windborne has collected and studied polyphonic vocal music for over 15 years from traditional singing masters from cultures around the world, Windborne is able to shift from radically different genres like no band you have ever heard, as comfortable with an improvised Corsican couplet song, as an English ballad. Lynn Mahoney Rowan, Will Thomas Rowan, Lauren Breunig, and Jeremy Carter-Gordon share a vibrant energy onstage – their connection to each other and to the music clearly evident. They educate as they entertain, telling stories about the music and explaining the characteristics and stylistic elements of the traditions in which they sing.

"Completely enthralled with them from the first notes...their harmonies are gorgeous..." -No Depression

The singers of the Windborne have a deep understanding, both musically and culturally, of the traditions from which they draw much of their repertoire. Their singing is a feast of a cappella harmony. -Peter Amidon, www.amidonmusic.com
