About the band:

Winds of the North (WOTN) began in early 2013 with the collaboration of Kenny Drummond and Ty MacKenzie.  Both experienced lead singers and guitarists, the two paired their unique talents and began writing music together.  As the project progressed, Steve McFarlane – a long-time friend and previous band mate of Ty’s – added his writing and bass guitar talents to the group.  Shortly after, the guys met their original drummer, John Whittaker, through a mutual friend and Winds of the North was born.

John left the band in late 2014 due to creative differences but he is featured on WOTN’s debut EP.  Matt “Sticks” Frazer, who Ty and Steve had played with in previous bands, was luckily available.  After a very successful jam session with the guys, he joined the band in late 2014.

The Winds of the North experience:

Winds of the North is a hybrid folk rock group.  Acoustic guitar, mandolin, and harmonica provide a folk foundation to the bands’ music.  The rock influence comes from their use of distorted electric guitar and heavy bass lines.  You will also find influences from punk, country and blues.  The band favours three part harmonies with alternating lead vocals amongst Ty, Kenny, and Steve.  Each of the guys writes music, both collaboratively and individually, which provides a wide range of style in composition.

What's been going on:

Throughout 2014, WOTN focused on writing and producing music while booking shows to get their name out there.  The band performed in several private and public events in the Summer, including the Milton Street Festival and Ribfest.   2014 was a great year for the band, ending with the release of their first four song, self-titled EP.  The EP was produced at Post Office Studios, in Liberty Village, Toronto.

What’s next?:

WOTN will be announcing plans for an EP release party in the near future.  A list of upcoming shows and festivals will also be posted and updated regularly.  Please contact WOTN for additional information.
